The Pens In The Year 1 BC (Before Crosby)

Fourteen-game losing streak got you down, Sabres fan?  Feeling like you've been run over by a tank?

History says things are going to get much better.  Take comfort from others who have been through it.

Five years ago, a diehard Penguins fan and college paper sportswriter named John Baranowski wrote a detailed piece on the tumultuous 2003-04 season of his beloved team.

"The team was laughable" and "I cannot stress to you how unbelievably bad this team was" are two phrases Baranowski used to describe a team that months later would draft Sidney Crosby, and two seasons later would be a Cup contender racking up 105 points.

Each situation is different and your mileage may vary, but I'm guessing there are folks in Chicago, Los Angeles and Tampa who wrote similar pieces.

It all makes me wonder -- how would recent history have unfolded had Pittsburgh drafted later in the top-10 and selected Gilbert Brule or Jack Skille?

Lets give Crosby a *#$%@& indirectly saying it was all him who made the Penguins great when they also got Fleury first over all, Malkin second overall, Jordan Staal second overall, and Ryan Whitney 5th overall, all in a 5 year span. So that’s 5th, first, second, first, second in five years.
Lets not forget that that was their draft order in each round. They should have had the most talented team in the world and won 5-7 Cups based on how loaded they should have been. So what the Sabers need to do is tank for the next 4 years in addition to this year and make sure they get cumulative draft position of 11 in 5 years, and 5 years after that, win one Cup.

Hate to say it but that strategy isn’t exactly working for the Oilers…
