It’s that time of year again, folks. The Flyers are about ready to partake in their annual spinning of the goaltending wheel of misfortune.
We have quite the group of qualified candidates to take a turn on the Orange and Black goalie carousel in 2011-12. Tomas Vokoun, Ilya Bryzgalov, Niklas Backstrom, step right up. You’re all on Broad Street’s radar.
Then of course we have Ryan Miller, Henrik Lundqvist, Martin Brodeur… wait, huh?
It’s no joke, and someone much more legitimate than an anonymous hockey blogger or basement dwelling rumormonger is apparently responsible for suggesting these marquee names.
Check out this gem from Flyers beat reporter Chuck Gormley, who is an award-winning sportswriter and columnist for the South Jersey Courier-Post, in his piece from last weekend:
There are whispers that [the Flyers] may make a pitch for Buffalo’s Ryan Miller, the Rangers’ Henrik Lundqvist, Calgary’s Miikka Kiprusoff, Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom or, yes, New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur.
Is this a case of a well-known mainstream media guy gone mad on an E-rated rumor binge? Not at all.
It seems Gormley had a valid source and was merely reporting what he had heard. During an online chat yesterday with Flyers fans, that source was identified as none other than Comcast executive Peter A. Luukko.
And to his credit, you could almost picture Gormley rolling his eyes as he discussed it.
Eric Superfan: Do you think the Flyers will land Vokoun?
Gormley: Not sure, Eric. I think they’re leaning in another direction. More like Bryzgalov or another veteran. Luukko mentioned the names Ryan Miller, Henrik Lundqvist and Marty Brodeur
Gormley: Yes, Really
(later in the chat)
dennis: Do you really think Buffalo would consider trading Miller for Carter?
Gormley: No. I think Peter Luukko’s got visions of grandeur
Great stuff. What’s next? Sabres owner Terry Pegula declaring his intention to inquire about Sidney Crosby? Hey, you know the Penguins have to be concerned about those concussion issues.
Call me crazy, but I’m betting that the Sabres and Rangers aren’t in much of a hurry to trade their franchise goaltenders. And I’ll also go out on a limb and theorize that Brodeur would marry Sean Avery before he would ever wear a Flyers uniform.
Take another spin, Philly.
