Sabres Presser Gets Heated

Sabres President Ted Black and General Manager Darcy Regier today held an end of season press conference which slowly devolved into an uncomfortable circus.

What started out as questioning about the futures of Regier, coach Ron Rolston, and star players Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller at around the midpoint turned into a testy back and forth, mostly between Black and a few newspaper reporters, which included accusations of defamatory comments and bias.

Aside from the bickering, the team announced that no decision has been made on Rolston, and that the futures of Vanek and Miller with the organization are uncertain.

Wow.  The unrest is reaching Habs-esque levels.  I don’t blame that fanbase one bit for being every bit angry.

Good for the Sabres fans.  Keep at it.

Sabres also announced they’ll be increasing ticket prices.
I’m sure that’ll help matters, haha.

What a clown that “writer” is.  Interrupts.  Prefaces statements insinuating that he’s speaking for the fans.  Who is this clown?

Gotta, say Siggy, I think he is speaking for the fans.  With a new bankroll and an ownership committed to winning, the Sabres have plummeted, year after year.  Despite high profile UFA signings, drafting guys like Calder Trophy winner Tyler Myers, perennial goal scorer Vanek and they continue to regress.

Add to that increased ticket prices for a hockey crazed city, to watch a degrading team.

I don’t get how it’s the writers fault that the fans at this point want different management.

I mean this is the guy who nabbed All-Star Ville Leino to spearhead this team, they should be exstatic to keep him there right?

Sorry.  He may be speaking for a segment of the fan base.  That has nothing to do with it.  His approach was completely unprofessional.  He made the presser about himself.  Not the GM or coach.  You could actually hear other writers groan when he stepped over the line again and again.

The most heated exchanges were between President Ted Black and 2 newspaper writers & a reporter (who isn’t a sports guy) from Buffalo’s NBC affiliate.  A lot of the tension carried over from the fact that Pegula hasn’t spoken publicly about the team in quite awhile. ow.ly/kxEvW

If you drag & drop that link at the end my last comment, you’ll see the most heated portion of the presser.  It got a bit out of hand.

Wow, I understand the fan base being frustrated with ownership & management, but watching @DaveDavisHockey’s link it seems like that “reporter’s” main goal is to show everyone in the room what an intolerable pissant he can be.

Mike Harrington and Jerry Sullivan were so unprofessional, no Larry Felser there! The rest of the local sports hacks especially the radio talking heads on WGR are morons, yet it doesn’t take a genius to realize that 16 years with very little results should mean that the current GM has failed terribly in his job. To me as a fan it seems that the owners in this town have as a business model and to keep the team mantra as that of the underdog. That has gotten real old. However the adversarial, contentious exchange we witnessed the other day makes me realize that the fans take their lead from these morons which is a bad example to follow indeed.
BTW Larry Felser was the best sportswriter we ever had, he will surely be missed!
