Some various tidbits on the Sabres, KK's draft coverage and a contest for readers in Buffalo (or anyone visiting!):
Tim Murray stated the obvious yesterday on WGR-550 radio when discussing his need for a left-handed shooting defenseman. Let's take a look at the list of such players, in no particular order, who appear to be available either via trade or free agency:
Cam Fowler, age 24, Anaheim, $4M annual salary - Versatile player who saw time on the Ducks' top pairing and power play unit for much of the season.
Hampus Lindholm, 22, Anaheim, RFA - Another good young defenseman the Ducks may be willing to part with but would likely cost Buffalo its first-rounder.
Jonas Brodin, 22, Minnesota, $4.17M - Tenth overall pick in 2011 by the Wild, who may be looking to shed what's left of his 6-year, $25M contract.
Jack Johnson, 29, Columbus, $4.36M - Hasn't quite lived up to the hype of a 3rd overall pick (2005), but would still be an upgrade in Buffalo.
Patrick Wiercioch, 25, Ottawa, RFA - Drafted by Ottawa when Murray was assistant GM and wouldn't cost much, but saw a lot of the press box last season.
via free agency:
Dan Hamhuis, 33, Vancouver, $4.5M last season - Veteran who will likely get a lot of attention from teams willing to overpay.
Brian Campbell, 36, Florida, $7.1M - Salary will drop, but how much? Even with Keith Yandle now in the fold, Florida wants the former Sabre back.
Kris Russell, 29, Dallas, $2.6M - Noted shot blocker who could potentially earn more than $5M per season from the winning bidder.
Kyle Quincey, 30, Detroit, $4.25M - Reliable player without as heavy a price tag.
David Schlemko, 29, New Jersey, $625K - Affordable journeyman who saw some time in New Jersey's top-four this past season.
I'll be covering the NHL Draft for KK Friday and Saturday. While my focus is on the Sabres, I'll certainly have my eyes and ears open for anything of interest league-wide.
