Report: Myers’ Name Is “Out There For Trade”

While it's no secret that Robyn Regehr, Jordan Leopold and Drew Stafford are being mentioned in trade talks, a report last night hinted that the Sabres could be putting a bigger name than all three of them on the block.

Jim Matheson of Edmonton Journal devoted some space in his column to defenseman Tyler Myers and suggested that Buffalo may be having some discussions with other teams about dealing him.

This would be a rather bold move, considering the former Calder winner just turned 23 less than 2 months ago, and he has been playing better than at the start of the season.

It's doubtful that the Sabres are aggressively shopping Myers, and I submit to you that Matheson's piece suggests that teams are kicking the tires on him and Regier is listening.

Stupid.  Are we gutting the team & rebuilding it, or trying to shift out some bad parts, or “win” this year, or what??  Knowing the direction we’re headed would be nice.  I don’t like the idea that we may be divesting ourselves of young players who need improvement in order to win “now”.  And this smacks of Darcy continuing to be in charge…but who will be coaching?  The Sabres need to have a game plan going forward before trading off players willy-nilly for a perceived high return.  This is insane.  Letting Darcy continue to write the game plan is insane.  He’s a parts guy, not a big picture guy.

The biggest thing that would likely keep Detroit from getting Myers is the realignment. Buffalo would have it shoved in their face so regularly if they traded Myers and he fulfilled his potential.

This is why I think this talk about Myers is absurd. In a previous post I compared him to Pronger. Young D, especially young lanky D like Myers (and like Pronger and Chara once were), do not develop quick. The fact Myers had such a great rookie season is actually pretty remarkable. With Chara it was harder to read because he was on such a bad team early in his career, but with Pronger, you can argue that it really took him 5 or 6 years before he became the player he was really drafted and projected to be.

Myers may well need a change of scenery to get there, but I think Buffalo would be silly to give up on him, at least before they get a new permanent coach in there and get a full training camp and season with him. At 23, Myers could easily still need three or four years before he rounds into the player his talent and size indicates that he should be.

As a Wings fan, I would take the financial risk of his contract in a heartbeat. I’d trade a first round pick and a top forward prospect without blinking.

Absolutely.

Or, how about Colaiacovo and Quincey?

IF Kenny could swing that one, much of the talk he’s lost it would cease…. at least til this summer.

I was trying to choose something in the realm of possible, but yeah, that’d be a swell trade from my perspective. smile

Well, it’s possible that Darcy Regier sustains some sort of head injury…
