Report: Miller, Vanek Likely Out Of Buffalo This Summer

Another day, another report of Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek being on their way out of Buffalo.

From Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson:

So the Buffalo Sabres off-loaded captain Jason Pominville, one of their three core players, to the Minnesota Wild one year before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

What about goalie Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek, the Sabres’ best natural scorer? They’re out the door, too, probably this summer.

As mentioned in the article, it will be interesting to see which team out west is a good fit for Miller.  Vanek could be a strong candidate to be reunited with Pominville in Minnesota, which would make the Wild pretty solid on the left side with Zach Parise already there.

Vanek would look great on Pasha’s wing, eh? I know, it’ll never happen

I am curious as to how the WIld, with all the whining their GM did about the financial status of the team prior to signing Parise and Suter to those contracts can afford the likes of Vanek.  Some buyouts must be in store.

This guy is a bonafide star and clutch goal scorer. He would look great in a Wings uniform.

The only way the Wild could take on Vanek is if they bought out Heater.  Backstrom will become a free agent but I’m not sure how the Wild will approach the goalie situation either because Harding has health issues (condolences).  Wings should try for Vanek anyhow.  The only downside is the Wings will have to give up something and he is quite injury prone.

Sportsnet suggested that Heatley could be a buyout candidate.

I keep thinking Holland will finally make a move and earn some redemption with the fan base that is critical of his failure to do anything “big”.  Signing Vanek would be “big”. I guess we will see (but not getting my hopes up).

Keep in mind Buffalo could trade Vanek at only $3.6 by keeping half his salary.  They will have the cap space and Pegula has the cash.  The return for both Vanek and Miller at half salary should be huge.

While he could pay half of Vanek’s salary I don’t believe it reduces the cap hit.  Not entirely sure.  The cap hit is what hurts the Wild, not necessarily having to pay.

I can see Miller moving but I think the Sabres will keep Vanek beyond the summer. I’m not sold on the fact that the Jimmy Howard experiment is a foregone conclusive matter, so the Miller being a natural fit there will be in play until it doesn’t happen. I wonder what will be done with Dave Leggio, will he be just another Gilles Villemure? A very good AHLer that never makes it in the big show. But before we get ahead of ourselves lets get the next 11 games done and wait for the dust to settle as far as draft selection order. I definitely don’t think Darcy should be allowed to remain in his position, the question then is who out there is better to make the choices in a draft that talking heads are calling on of the best in years?
