It’s not that I don’t feel guilty about missing Easter with you and the family, Mom. But there’s a rather important hockey game going on tomorrow afternoon and I just absolutely have to be there. The team that dad got me hooked on and took me to watch as a kid can eliminate the hated Philadelphia Flyers from the playoffs.
I know hockey isn’t in your blood and you wouldn’t know a puck from an overcooked meatball, so you just don’t understand what a big deal this is for Buffalo. I know you’re upset but I’ll try to explain this so that you’ll understand. And please save me some lasagna – you’re the one that always says it tastes better the next day.
Remember, Mom, when we watched the Olympics last year and I told you about Ryan Miller? Well, he’s been performing what amounts to highway robbery in the Sabres net lately, and I have to witness for myself whether or not he and his undersized and underdog teammates can really pull this off.
I want to see if this young forward named Tyler Ennis can carry the momentum of his monster game and huge overtime goal last night into Sunday and forever etch his name into Buffalo sports history.
A few years ago you told me you loved “that cute Danny Briere fellow” when he scored huge goals for the Sabres. Well, he plays for the other team and is the enemy now. As bad as I feel about not enjoying the holiday with you, I hope you can understand how I need to be there to see the story of his continued battle against Miller and his other ex-teammates unfold right in front of me.
You don’t realize how uncommon it is for the same guy to coach a team for thirteen years, Mom, but we have a pretty sharp character here named Lindy Ruff who, thanks in part to this mastermind “system” that we keep hearing about, somehow has his team winning this series despite not having been much better than the opposition in any of the five games. I have to be in that loud and crazy building tomorrow.
Mom, the Flyers have been moaning and groaning about the officiating. They have this skilled and gritty captain named Mike Richards for whom even Buffalo fans used to have respect. But now we can’t stand the sight or sound of him, and I wouldn’t want to miss the sour look on his face as a member of the losing team giving post-series handshakes.
Please understand how crucial this game is for me to have to cancel important plans with you. Yes, Mom, if Buffalo wins it will definitely be worth missing your homemade cherry cheesecake. If they lose, well… remember that cooking class you talked me into going to with you on Tuesday evening?
You know what? Never mind for right now. I’ll give you a call tomorrow night.
