Chara Says He Didn’t Know It Was Pacioretty

Zdeno Chara spoke to the media this morning after the Bruins optional skate. Boston faces the Buffalo Sabres tonight at the TD Garden.
Those who feel that Tuesday’s incident was an act of revenge by Chara may find one particular quote to be quite interesting. This from WGR’s Paul Hamilton:
Chara and Pacioretty have a little history from earlier this season. I wondered if he knew it was him. Chara said, “No, it was the faceoff and we tried to set up a play and the puck went to the other side and we were racing for the puck. I had no idea he was on the ice.”
Regarding Pacioretty’s angry reaction after hearing that the NHL would not impose a suspension:
“I totally understand. He’s in the hospital so he’s got the right to be emotional so I respect that,” Chara said. “I obviously feel bad he got hurt. As a hockey player we all feel bad when something like that happens. ... I’m wishing him to a fast recovery and hopefully he’ll be back on the ice soon. That’s all we love to do. We love to [play] hockey. When we go out there, we take risks and sometimes we do get hurt. But it’s just very unfortunate.”

A 2, a 5, and a 10 for BS.
You know who is out there, and this only makes Chara look worse.

Chara not realzing it was him in that instance, I could buy, not knowing who is on the ice after a faceoff, not buying it at all.

If we take Chara at his word… that he didn’t know who was out on the ice… then he is one dumb MF’er. Every great hockey player I’ve ever heard speak about who’s on the ice says you are always aware of who is on the ice at a given time.
And to paraphrase a Seinfeld bit: (where George comes out of Jerry’s bathroom and falls to the floor with his pants down) Jerry says “And you wanna be my Norris Candidate”.

About The Sabres Observer
Dave Davis has covered the Buffalo Sabres for various NHL accredited websites and newspapers since 2003. He was the senior writer and Sabres correspondent for The Fourth Period, covered hockey for Western New York Sports and Leisure Magazine, and has had articles featured on NHL.com, FOX Sports, Yahoo Sports and in New York Sportscene. Sabres news and notes can be found on his Twitter page.
Davis originally garnered media attention in 2002 as leader of a lobbying campaign working in unison with potential buyer Mark Hamister attempting to secure state financing to keep the Sabres in Buffalo. In 2004, Davis was briefly back on the airwaves - this time reaching the finals of the inaugural "WGR Rookie" sports talk competition. After a few years of "syndicating" his articles on various sites, along with doing some internet radio work, Davis now devotes his new media efforts to bringing quality Sabres related opinions and content to Kukla's Korner.

If he would just simply say, “I’m sorry for doing this.” It would look better for him. Making up bullshit excuses like he didn’t know he was on the ice is ridiculous. Players need to be held responsible for any hit like this. He knew where he was going, knew where he was pushing the player into.
