10 Reasons Why The Sabres Won’t Waive Jochen Hecht

I'm pretty confident that the Sabres would be happy to get, say, a 5th or 6th-round draft choice for Jochen Hecht on or before April 3rd.  Hey, John Scott was dealt for a 5th-rounder last season at the trade deadline, so who knows?

To all of you Sabres fans who think such a return would be worthless, and can't understand why Buffalo would demote Brian Flynn or Marcus Foligno instead of waiving Hecht, I have 10 reasons for you:

Sabres Observer Radio: Fate Of The “Hockey Genius”

Things get heated on Sabres Observer Radio as Joe Pinzone of Buffalo Wins is furious over comments made by Sabres executive Ken Sawyer that were reported in the Buffalo News.  The debate is whether or not Sawyer's reference to Darcy Regier as a "hockey genius" is an indicator of the GM's future in being the man in charge of revamping Buffalo's roster.

Also, we're joined on the show by AP hockey writer Mike Haim and game presentation aficionado Eric Schmitz of 3rd Man In.

Rolston’s Overuse Of Ott Exposes Sabres’ Scoring Woes

Some quick Sabres trivia: Which two Buffalo forwards lead the team in average ice time since Ron Rolston replaced Lindy Ruff as head coach?

If you don’t have Steve Ott as one of your answers, you lose.

As a matter of fact, Ott and captain Jason Pominville are the only 2 forwards on the team under Rolston to average more than 20 minutes per game.

Some will tell you this is due to the fact that Ott plays on both special teams units.

I’ll tell you it’s because this talent-deficient Sabres team doesn’t have too many other options.

Rookie Watch: Grigorenko, Foligno

Mark Easson of Sports City asked me to contribute to his feature on NHL rookies.

Suffice it to say the Sabres don't have any Calder candidates this year.

Enroth Admits To Using Performance-Detracting Substances

Sabres goaltender Jhonas Enroth raised a few eyebrows last night when he told the media, following a Buffalo 3-2 shootout loss to New Jersey in which cramps caused him to leave the game after Patrick Elias' game-tying goal with just over a minute left in regulation, that he probably shouldn't drink coffee on game days.

While this admission irritated some Buffalo media and fans, coffee isn't exactly a newfound discovery among NHL players.

Kaleta Speaks Out About Suspension

From Paul Hamilton of WGR-550,

"A lot of people are calling me scumbags, a dirty hockey player, but I play hard, I play on the edge. It doesn’t define me as a person, it defines one play that could be controversial either way, so that’s the way it is."

Less Than 4 Games For Kaleta Is Asking For Trouble

Brendan Shanahan has to make a decision on the nasty Patrick Kaleta hit from behind on Brad Richards which took place during the Rangers 3-2 shootout win over the Sabres last night.  The Buffalo forward has a 3:00 p.m. hearing by phone.

If you're looking for some irrational defense of the hit from a big fan of the team, you won't get it here.  There's no excuse for what Kaleta did, and any talk of whether or not Richards did some acting after he landed on the ice is ridiculous and irrelevant.

PETA Feeling Fury Over Sabres’ Faux Fur

While the Sabres' ritual of giving the team's brown fur coat to their player of the game has helped lighten the mood in a tough season, a well known animal rights group was not impressed when hearing of it.
