The Malik Report

Of Red Wings-related note this morning:
The Wings have played approximately 72% of their schedule, so the Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness posted a slate of “third quarter” Red Wings grades that are ever-so-slightly early and based upon the Wings’ contributions over games 42-59 (and he seems to be marking players down for missed attendance):
Pavel Datsyuk (A-/A-/A) – 17 goals, 31 assists. Despite playing just 40 games this season, Datsyuk is second on the team in scoring.
Tomas Holmstrom (B/B-/C+) –12 goals, 13 assists. On the fourth line since returning from a broken hand, but does see his normal power play time.
Jonathan Ericsson (C/C+/C+) –3 goals, 11 assists. Has a career-best 14 points this season, but more impressive is his plus-13, which is third best on the team.
Jimmy Howard (A+/B+/B+) – 30-10-3, 2.76 GAA, .908 SV%. Since being pulled in a loss to Nashville, Howard has won four straight and has allowed just six goals. He leads the league in wins.
This one really surprises me:
Jakub Kindl (D/D/D+) – 1 goal, 1 assist. Seems to have found himself back to being a healthy scratch now that the Wings’ blue line is fully healthy.
Continued if you wish to read ‘em, and I’ll try to post a more holistic set of grades sometime this week…
• This is a few days old, but let’s all pretend to be surprised that the Hockey News’s Ryan Dixon suggests that Nicklas Lidstrom remains the favorite for the Norris Trophy at this point:
1. Nicklas Lidstrom: Graced the cover of our most recent issue, where we anointed him the best 40-year-old in NHL history
It’s entirely possible that, somewhere down the line, chunks of their article will mysteriously appear somewhere…
• This doesn’t surprise me one bit: despite the fact that the NBA made sure to show prospective Pistons buyer Tom Gores and current Pistons owner Karen Davidson attending the NBA All-Star game, the Detroit News’s Gregg Krupa and Vincent Goodwill report that the NBA will deliberately fudge the financial number that Gores will eventually purchase the Pistons, the Palace and Palace Sports & Entertainment for as Davidson still wants over $400 million for the whole enchilada (Wings owner Mike Ilitch offered a realistic 2011 price of $370 million, while Davidson’s still selling as if it’s 2007). The NBA, like the NHL, doesn’t want to mess with franchise values by announcing a heavily discounted price, so they’ll find a way to fib. They’re doing a pretty good job of fibbing at present as they’re going to lock out their players and fans next season.
• And Fox Sports Detroit has announced its ten semifinalists for the “April in the D” song contest, per Motor City Bengals’ Josh Parent. Fans (i.e. you and me) can vote on the semifinalists between now and March 8th.

About The Malik Report
The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
