So true, but the return needs to happen quickly.

Return of wounded will be decisive.

Yes, but when?

As important as the when is… stopping the constant revolving door of injuries would be nice. Seems as soon as one comes back, Jobu strikes again.

Absolutely.  When you consider the mountain of injures (third in “man games lost”) and the fact that the Wings are still just one regulation tie away from being in the playoffs, it’s foolish to count them out of the playoffs.

At the beginning of the season they had five top-six forwards (sorry Justin) and all five of those guys have missed at least 12 games.  At the beginning of the season they had three top-four defensemen and two of them have missed at least 16 games.

When (if) they get any kind of healthy, they should get into the playoffs even if they only play mediocre for the rest of the season.  This year they’ve won five of twelve games and at the end of last year they won three of ten.  That’s 8 wins in the last 22 games and they’re still tied in points for 8th in the East.  All they have to do is get some of their top-six forwards back and they’re going to play better almost by default.

With even a mostly healthy lineup I’d take the Wings in a seven-game series with ANYONE in the East with the exception of Boston and Pittsburgh…and Detroit’s already beaten Boston twice this season. Obviously they need to actually get healthy first and then qualify for the playoffs but no one is going to convince me that Washington, Carolina, Toronto, Montreal, f*cking Columbus, New Jersey etc. are legitimately stronger teams than Detroit.

I’d be curious how one can objectively say that a team which is tied for the last playoff spot could be considered “out of it”.

In the East it would be reasonable to say that the Sabres, Panthers and Islanders are probably out of it.

No indication they can stay healthy or are getting healthy. If this is status quo they are out of it. Ill still watch and hope they win by im a realist.

Here’s an indication that some are getting healthy.

http://kuklaskorner.com/tmr/comments/a-few-wings-skating-today-a-few-are-not

And no, there is no indication that they can stay healthy but that’s because there is never any guarantee that anyone can stay healthy.  Every player in the league is healthy until they aren’t.  That’s life.

Since the beginning of the 2007 season Henrik Zetterberg missed a total of 24 games over six seasons.  That would seem to be an indication that he could stay healthy, yet here he is this year missing 13 games.  Does that mean he’ll never be able to stay healthy?

Franzen is out with a concussion.  We all know that it can take days or months or more to recover and that when he does recover there is no indication whatsoever that he will or will not get another concussion.

Ill still watch and hope they win by im a realist.

A realist?  You’ve given up hope that the team can ever get healthy or that they can stay healthy if they do get healthy.  And you’ve written off the team when they are zero points out of a playoff spot.

You think that’s realism?  That’s not realism, that’s pessimism, if not outright defeatism.

John Buccigross of ESPN when asked if the Wings’ playoff streak will continue…

Unless they make a major trade to reshape their team or we see an unexpected spike in scoring, the math does not look good for the Red Wings to make the playoffs. I would lean toward no right now.

Oh yeah, because that guy is a load of hockey knowledge.

In other news… Christina Hendricks is hot.

My favorite site for these sort of what-ifs is Sports Club Stats.  The assumptions behind the math is that teams wil perform about how they’ve performed to date (so it doesn’t recognize trades, injuries, in-seas adjustments to style or skill, etc.).  It currently gives the Wings a 42% chance of making the playoffs (has been as low as 38% in recent weeks, and as high as 65% if we go back to the first week in January).  It projects that the Wings need 32 points in their last 29 games to probably make the post-season, but that Detroit is on pace to get 31 more points.  (If you switch games over to the 50/50 method, i.e., taking all skill out of things and just flip coins, it would project that a team with 29 remaining games would get 33 more points, so in essence the Wings are playing worse than .500 to date.)

42% ain’t nothing.  But don’t kid yourselves into thinking that once everyone gets back to being healthy that we’re looking at a possible upside any better than the 7th seed.  This team is squarely facing an early golf season or PIT or BOS in the first round.
