Wings Sign Mantha To Entry-Level Contract

Detroit, MI... The Detroit Red Wings today agreed to terms with right wing Anthony Mantha on a three-year entry-level contract. In accordance with club policy, additional details will not be disclosed.

Mantha, 19, was selected by Detroit this past June in the first round (20th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-5, 204-pound forward has gotten off to a fast start this season with the Val d’Or Foreurs, leading the QMJHL with 23 points (13-10-23) in only eight contests. Last season, he was the league’s only 50-goal scorer, tallying 89 points (50-39-89) in 67 games and ranking 10th overall in scoring. He also added 12 points (5-7-12) in nine postseason contests. A native of Longueuil, Quebec, Mantha has compiled 158 points (83-75-158) in 139 major junior games

Should be a good signing. He brings a lot of grit, a sandpaper-type game. I’ll never forget his epic battle with Godzilla, when he ...

...oh, wait ...that was Mothra

This kid looks to be a great NHL player, but others have looked that way in juniors and ended up as total busts.  I hope Mantha is the next coming of Stevie Y.

Let’s hope he doesn’t turn out to be Mantha pudu.

I feel like that joke doesn’t hit with most of the constituents of this site but I laughed.

Please excuse this repost of a comment from one of George’s blog posts, but I think it’s entirely relevant to the theme of this post…

Looks like the Wings have another future 4th-liner/press-box player in the making. Enjoy the fun on the ice while you can, Anthony, because you’ll be sitting on your ass if Babcock is still the coach when you finally run out of waivers and the Wings have to promote you.

I was going to add the (sarcasm) code before that paragraph, but I’m afraid it’s far too likely to happen to actually be sarcasm.

Admitedly, I don’t have a lot of first-hand info about Mantha. But I’ll go with George’s observation of him during training camp…

Anthony Mantha: Confident. Mobile. Fast at times. Big hard shot. Roars to the net. Soaked in the detail work and asked for help when he needed it.

That’s definitely someone who Babcock will sit versus whoever the “veteran du jure” of 2016 is when Mantha will be “over-ripe” for NHL play.
