Ready for what? Another night in the pressbox watching Ouellet play 5 minutes as a 7th d-man?

Z PP unit should never be first on PP’s.  Need 27+/- wins to wild card, no games to waste.

Imo Z unit has been better than Larkin unit in zone time and creating PP chances.

A couple weeks ago, Blashill was quoted as saying that he’s “heard” from his veteran players that it’s really, really, really important that these 5-man PP units develop chemistry and familiarity. So please, please, please don’t adjust the personnel. Hmm, I’m guessing that message came from guys like Kronwall, Zee, Abby…you know, the guys who no longer belong on a #1 PP unit, but have fooled the coach into thinking that any changes will lead to complete chaos.

The sad thing is Blashill apparently has listened. He can use the blender for 5-on-5 play, but once that PP starts, we better stick with what “works”. So ridiculous. Zee, Kronwall, Abby have no speed, not to mention that 2 of those 3 guys can barely handle the puck anymore. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

Consider these stats…

Abby - 103 minutes on PP - has 1 goal and 3 assists
Mantha - 87 minutes on PP - has 6 goals and 3 assists
Frk - 73 minutes on the PP - has 4 goals and 3 assists

But we keep using Abby.

Kronwall - 85 minutes on the PP - has 1 goal and 5 assists
Green - 100 minutes on the PP - has 1 goal and 11 assists

Why isn’t Green used much more? He gets 8 extra seconds per game compared to Kronwall. Does Brent Burns “split” his PP time with another d-man? Not even close. Burns doesn’t play 8 extra seconds per game, but almost a full 60 seconds more. Karlsson plays 90 extra seconds over Phaneuf. Pietrangelo plays an extra 80 seconds per nigh over Parayko, who is pretty effective in his own right.

So why do other teams ride their #1 PP quarterback, yet we have Mike Green playing 8 more seconds than the useless Kronwall. Abby plays more than Mantha and Frk. Ridiculous coaching.

Seems like Z unit wastes all the 5 on 3’s, while they get chances they rarely convert. They haven’t done it too much lately but wings need to stop trying to set FRK up. Keep the players moving and let them rush to the net with the puck.

You are correct. I was at both the Florida and Tampa games. When on the PP the Red Wings kept trying to set up Frk for the one timer. Didn’t work.  confused

Does that mean Witkowski will be a scratch? Or will they go 11 and 7? Hmmm…

I guess your opinion is your opinion and you have a right to it, but there is actually data to show that position is incorrect over at the athletic: https://theathletic.com/198829/2018/01/07/numbers-explain-why-red-wings-struggle-so-mightily-on-power-play/

Exactly right MZ. But I guess the veterans told Blashill that they didn’t like any changes. And as a brilliant coach he listened. Look at my stats above. How can anyone justify Kronwall and Abby logging big minutes?

This is why eye test and stats should work together. Not opponents, even if they contradict each other.

Thanks for posting the article, MZ! I think I’m going to pull some conclusions out of it for those that don’t have access.

Less shots, less high danger chances, and a regression to the mean on shooting percentage, entries more predictable.

In December alone, the Wings’ second unit generated 50 shots more per 60 minutes of power-play time.

From the chart given, in December, the Larkin unit gets more shots and more chances….but goals for per 60 is essentially the same. Versus in oct/November, where the Larkin unit vastly out performed the Z unit.

But I will pose this: the PP was so good to start, now regressing. But the Z unit has had more consistency in their numbers; its the Larkin unit that has dropped significantly in high danger chances, goals for, and thus probably the drop in shot percentage.
