Detroit’s planned arena district development took a step closer to reality today as the Ilitch Holdings team began briefing Detroit-based contractors on how they can participate in the project.
Working with the City of Detroit, the Ilitch family’s Olympia Development has set a goal of using 30% Detroit-based firms as contractors for the arena district and hiring 51% of construction workers from among Detroit residents.
At today’s conference for contractors at MotorCity Casino, Ilitch Holdings CEO Christopher Ilitch promised an “amazing walkable district” from the project. His team of lead contractors, consultants, and city officials also briefed the 200 or so local contractors on how to become certified to work on the project.
Initial site work and utility relocation is scheduled to begin in December, with excavation of the arena site and erection of steel and concrete to begin by next summer. The arena itself is expected to be finished by summer 2017, along with the initial portions of the residential, retail, and commercial district that rise near it.

About The Malik Report
The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
