Filppula is out tonight just in case you were unsure...
added 3:54pm, from Ansar Khan,
“It's been taking some time, but I'm excited to get going here,'' Smith said. “I actually got my first point here, so I like this rink. Good memories.''
The Red Wings look forward to having Smith's puck-moving and puck-rushing ability back in the lineup.
“I've been skating a lot, but stamina is going to be a big thing,'' Smith said. “Just be good defensively; make good, quick plays and don't try to do too much or you'll get yourself in trouble.
“Short shifts, make the first pass you see. Don't try to make it too complicated.''

Khan tweet,
Ian White said he was surprised to be a healthy scratch tonight, Said he’s frustrated and upset by it.

Yeah, Im as surprised as White…
I understand Q is +10, but who wants to see for how long that stands, once he is paired against the other team’s top lines?
I know I don’t
Posted by Zqto on 02/27/13 at 04:53 PM ET
A bit surprised by this; then I realized he has 1 G and 1 A, and averages 20:48/game in ice time for the year. I figured they wanted to let him rest a bit, but that isn’t too much ice time to warrant rest, and they’ve had some time off. Maybe it’ll put some fire in his belly.

I could see that working, if it was for a good D
Still I would rather pack kindl and Filp… But yeah, that would get much less in return, too
Posted by Zqto on 02/27/13 at 04:58 PM ET
Jonathan Ericsson 6’ 4” 221
Niklas Kronwall 6’ 0” 190
Kyle Quincey 6’ 2” 207
Brendan Smith 6’ 2” 198
Brian Lashoff 6’ 3” 212
Kent Huskins 6’ 4” 210
By Red Wings’ standards that’s a HUGE defensive starting lineup

Jakub Kindl 6’ 3” 199 instead of Kent Huskins 6’ 4” 210

That would be too unreal…..that being said, I don’t like seeing Q on the ice…makes me put my beer down all the time…but White has not played super well, so let’s give Babs props for finally sitting down someone and hopefully, that will scare other players

“The Red Wings look forward to having Smith’s puck-moving and puck-rushing ability back in the lineup”
Which has frequently led to odd-man rushes coming back the other way.
If the Wings are going to let Smith excel as much as possible, they really need to find a veteran stay-at-home defenseman to make up for Smith’s offensive-mindedness.

Bogosian?
Erik Johnson?

Yeah, but just think of a Smith / Johnson or Bogosian pair
Only thing might excite more would be something like Pavel skating with Kopitar (madness!! stop it!)

Something about Kent Huskins’ name makes me want to rearrange it.
Hunt Keskins
Kunk Haskins
Hunk Kuskins
Kunt Heskins
Husk Kuskins
I don’t know what it is. It’s keeping me awake nights.

He’s on the second year of a five-year deal. I would gladly trade the expiring contracts of Filppula and White for Yandle.
Posted by Garth on 02/27/13 at 05:28 PM ET
I have no problem with White sitting a game, personally.
I never really understood all of the love for Bogosian. We currently have enough d-men who turn the puck over in their own zone as it is. I still think Mark Streit would be a good fit…and I can’t see the Isle resigning both he and Visnovsky. But of the two I’d think Streit would be the most likely to be extended. Doesn’t matter any way since I’m not expecting any kind of significant move from Holland.

Kunt Heskins
I think I’ve seen a porno with someone by that name it it.
I’ve said too much.

I agree with SYF, a little Machiavellian motivation for White.

Quoting the article here…..the “suddenly” part bothers me. Can you really be that surprise or am I being really too harsh on him? Can you be that delusional?Or again….maybe I just exaggerate and he really is not so bad to deserve to be benched?

The thing I don’t like about White sitting is, he routinely shoots the puck and his shots routinely cause chaos in front of the net. Might not be scoring but he’s creating circumstances to score and I’d rather have him on the point than Brunner because of Brunners defensive lapses. White’s a righty too. I’ve had no complaints about his play aside from not denting the scoresheet, but it’s not for lack of trying. He’s usually playing with Detroits lower tier guys so limited point production is expected.
And as for the people who think Smith has caused all kinds of odd man rushes, I don’t know what games you’re watching but I’ve seen MAYBE a handful, which is about how many Kronners is giving up PER GAME. And I don’t think all but one led to a goal. Smith has been STELLAR in the neutral zone against the other team, breaking up plays, intercepting passes. His D play is up there with his offense, it’s mentally keeping your ducks in a row and not getting caught up he’s got to keep working at, but has done great at in my opinion. Bigger the game, better he plays. Glad he’s back in the line-up.
Posted by HockeytownOverhaul on 02/27/13 at 05:56 PM ET
White is our most dispensable highest value D though, in a contract year. He was really here for Lidstrom to play catch with on the line and he’s not here so that’s limited his role as well. I think you might be right about dangling trade-bait. Along with Flip and White, that couldn’t actually catch a decent haul and it wouldn’t set us back giving the wave of younger guys coming in.
Anyone else catch Flips comments about liking in Detroit “but we’ll see what happens”? Got that same Pav feeling with Flip too about staying in the Winged Wheel.
Interested to watch this develop.
And Garth, shut-up about him not being a second-line center… at least until April 3rd ![]()

So, let me get this straight, an injured forward underachieving heavily thus far this season, and a D that Babcock has made a healthy scratch = trade bait?

Well, first off, any team that trades anything useful to us has to feel out of the playoff picture or that they’re sellers. Or else they’re sending us back someone who’s underachieved but has been reliable in the past.
Filpulla isn’t even a full season removed from 66pnts which shows you the production you’d get when he’s healthy (allegedly at least). And White could be scratched because we have bodies that can fill in and avoid him getting injured, assuming there’s a deal close.
I really dont’ think it’s far fetched we dangle them as trade bait. Especially given comments about Filpulla recently and White being a perfectly useable all-around decent top 4 D. But no teams need D right? or Centers?

Filppula’s injury is minor as far as anyone has said, and as far as White being a healthy scratch, it’s not at all unheard of to scratch a guy you’re planning to deal and it’s not as if he has been scratched multiple times this season. This is the first time, and if he’s being traded that’s the perfect reason to scratch him. The last thing you want is to be working on a deal and have the guy get injured just before the deal is done.

You know, I’ve been thinking about it and I’ve come to the decision that he’s a #1 centre and I just don’t think he deserves to have to play second/third fiddle behind Datsyuk and Zetterberg. He’s worth a LOT to any team and I think any GM worth his salt would offer a king’s ransom for Filppula.

i’m confused how you guys think a team like Phoenix would trade a top-2 star defensemen for ANYONE who they don’t have a guarantee will re-sign. Rentals usually get draft picks. Maybe White, Filps, and Nyquist could pry a Yandle, but you guys don’t get how this works if you think you can just get rid of people you DON’T want in exchange for stars. To get stars, you have to give up players that you REALLY would rather keep. Think back… Chelli, Hasak, Lang, Bertuzzi etc. These guys cost top player/prospects. We traded for Schneider a year he was a RENTAL with an expiring contract and we gave up Sean Avery, Maxim Kuznetsov, a first rounder in 2003, and second rounder in 2004.
nobody’s trying to help us out.

maybe Flip, Q, Huskins, and Gustavsson for Oliver Ekman-Larsson
Posted by WingsFaninCO on 02/27/13 at 07:29 PM ET
Unless they’ve already discussed with a players agent where he would entertain wanting to go. A team that might need a shake-up or some fresh-blood might absolutely be willing to take a gamble they keep either the top 4 D, the top 6 F/C or both.
I just don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility and sitting White, a vet, a righty who’s been status quo all season doesn’t make sense any other way, to me. And when Colaiacovo comes back that makes White even more moveable given how steady lashoff and Huskins have been.
