Wings Fall To The Panthers 2-1

On their sixth shot of the game, the Wings scored their only goal of the night plus it was from an unlikely source, Dan Cleary.

The Wings finished with 9 shots in the 1st perid and only had 5 in the 2nd period.  After going down 2-1 early in the 3rd period, the Wings could only fire 9 shots (that includes 4 minutes of power play time) in the 3rd period at Tim Thomas.  Florida finished the game with 37 shots while the Wings had 23.

End of story, end of game, Wings lose another home game, 2-1 to the Florida Panthers.

If you want to watch Cleary's go, you can watch it below...

Thoughts:
Weiss is not ready to be a #1 center.
Alfredson does not pass the puck too a teammate ahead of him on the rush. This hamstrung the Wings offense a couple times.
Nobody on the team knows what anyone else is doing on the ice unless Tots is out there, then they know he’s in the offensive zone making life hard for someone.

meh. back to back games; just seemed like the wings ran out of gas. would have been nice to at least get a point, tho.

Former Wings draft pick Shaw Matthias with two helpers stepped up against his old team

Mr. Weiss on the other hand…........

At what point does Weiss’s bad start turn into a bust????????

Maybe Lou Lamarillio will take Weiss for Brunner straight up tongue wink

I figured Cleary would get his next goal in a blowout where his goal meant absolutely nothing. Instead, he was the best offensive player. On the bright side, they didn’t give up another PPG.

he either earns his entire paycheck during this stretch without Pav and Z, or he earns his buyout.  Enough of the excuses, you are either a good player or not.

...the Wings scored their only goal of the night plus it was from an unlikely source, Dan Cleary.

Immediately after the game, Ken Holland had this to say: “We knew Danny Cleary would be a difference-maker for us. We just didn’t know it would happen so soon. We’re so thrilled that he’s proved us correct that our nipples are all erect. His outstanding shot into a wide-open net certainly has earned him a spot on the top line. And it will ultimately earn him a multi-year contract in January. Thank you, Danny Boy, for proving our faith in you was well founded.” [/sarcasm]

On a more serious note, that non-goal which was ruled a goal was just one more example of the systemic incompetence of NHL refs. I say we go to a system of video-based refs who call the game from some fricking control booth. It can’t possibly be worse than what were seeing from the on-ice idiots these days.

I absolutely hate this guy. His $4.5M cap hit is an absolute albatross right now. But I’m willing to give him until the end of the playoffs to prove that he’s worth that much money.

However, if he still sucks like a porn star in a John Holmes movie after that point, either he needs to go or Ken Holland needs to go. Period. End of story.

Thought I heard George say Weiss can’t be bought out.  Signed on the new CBA not the old one.

it may be true, i dunno. if so what awful news.

let’s get real, though: he’s been a good to great player. i think he’ll sort it out. it’s been. 30 games w a new team, it’s not like he forgot how to play good hockey. something temporary is up, or so we all better hope.

is “starstruck” a thing for weiss? he’s likely never seriously thought about winning a Cup. now he’s immersed in the wings’ history etc. any chance it’s that?

there’s a lot of pressure, too. he knows his deal is unmovable, he’s seeing failed trades, waivers, demotions—all of loyal and mostly well liked teammates. he’s responsible for what happens on the ice, but to think this team isn’t struggling w major tension is naive…

Buyout:

Read it and weep.

Had high hopes for this guy. Guess years in south florida made him soft and lazy.
He was ripped on the FSD intermission by Osgood and that other guy when he didn’t feel like going to the net as Abdelkader carried the puck down the wing to the corner.
The guy is playing like he has his head up arse and he doesn’t have the excuse of being young and like Brendan Smith.
Some team will take him if Kenny gives up on him but the Red Wings will probably be forced to pay part of his salary to push him out of town.
Maybe back to panthers for a pair of alligator boots

It seems to me he is still too worried about his new defensive abilities that he isn’t joining in on the offensive rush.  I still have hope for him, but it is taking longer than I expected.

I’m going to say that point isn’t less than 10% of the way into his new contract.

I watched Weiss for years on Panthers and he was always excellent until last season when he was injured and I believe he tried to play with a bad wrist for most of the shortened season and had surgery for it in the offseason. I watched the game and he doesn’t look like the old Weiss more like the Weiss from last season. As for Shawn Matthias he has been great the last couple of years very happy to have gotten Matthias for Bert who was a bust for the Panthers… I plan on being at the Panthers/Wings game Tuesday in Sunrise. Come on down there will be plenty of seats…Thaw your aching bones…

Well if were gonna play the math game in determining if weiss is a bust or not…..then:

25 games = ~30% of the season and he has 4 points which projects to 12 this year and 48 for the entirety of the contract.

I’m not a NHL GM , so please let me know when we should be concerned. I haven’t played a game this year and he has 4 points more than I do.

Being concerned and closing the door on a guy as a bust are severely different things.

I’m going to assume most wings fans are also Tiger fans. As we saw with Victor Martinez, it often takes a good long time to get back into any sort of groove after being out an entire season. And then we can factor in the adjustment new team with a dramatically different system and ever changing line mates due to coaching and injuries. I’m disappointed in his lack of production at this point, but not terribly surprised.

Give it at least till the Olympic break, then let’s re-evaluate. After that, then maybe I’m willing to talk about the cost of his contract v production being an issue.

Dude, Weiss isn’t going anywhere. Just Look at Sammy, and how long the wings had patience (and no trade clause) with him. I highly doubt the Wings will move Weiss unless we get a great defensive defenseman for him, which would be… pretty much awesome considering we can still win w/o Weiss production and we would surrender less goals if we had a beefy blue line.
