Wings/Canadiens Recap

Probably the shortest post every in The Malik Report, but I've been working since 7:00am and need some sleep.

Just when you think the Wings had the game, Montreal scores late with their goalie pulled.

Then in OT, it is good Nyquist!  Wings win 2-1.

Feel free to discuss...

Gotta wonder where we’d be in the standings if nyquist had played at all in the first quarter of the season.. Big W. wish it would have been less dramatic, but a W is a W

@ Robert - Nyquist in GR, Tatar in the press box just so Danny Cleary and Sammy could chug up and down the ice with 1k lb weights around their ankles. That is called a strikeout for Ken Holland and mike Babcock.

Buuuut, now that they know they made mistakes with personnel, I really admire Bab’s trust in Jurco, Sheahan and Tatar. It’s awesome that they’re now embracing the youth movement, and rightfully so. That line is so energetic and so much fun to watch. Not to mention Nyquist’s speed. I love our young players.

Now just wait until we can incorporate Mantha, Pulkkinen, Jarnkrok, Sproul, Ouellet and Backman. Our future is bright.

Wings are 29th out of 30 teams winning games that they are leading going into the 3rd. You could see it coming with a min left in this one. Glad we got the 2 but phew…..

In how many games have the Wings given up the tying or go ahead go with less than 2 minutes to play?  And in how many games have we scored it?

It’s probably selection bias but it feels like it’s happening a lot this year.

In those specific parameters of GTG/GWG less than 2 minutes remaining:

Red Wings: 3 times, with a record of 2-1
Zetterberg, Carolina - OTW; Datsyuk, NYI - SOL; Kronwall, LA - SOW
Opponent: 3 times, Wings going 2-1 in those games
(Eakin for Dallas, who won in OT; Ward for Washington (on Ovechkin’s shot), but Wings won in SO; last night with Gionta for Montreal, but Wings win in OT)

Glad to know it isn’t an epidemic.

The tendency for the Wings to give up late game leads is directly related to the retirement of Nick Lidstrom…

So…. glad they got 2 pts but, to be honest letting MTL get 1 mostly nullified what help it was.  It puts them 3 ahead of CBS, WAS, and OTT… but makes MTL 5 ahead of them instead of only 4.  And DET needs to be chasing MTL and TOR, not trying to hold off the other 3.

It’s like DET can’t help but keep themselves buried in their own division for stupid reasons.  Incredibly disappointed with the outcome, even as a “W”.

I disagree.  Detroit’s focus right now should be widening the gap between themselves and the five teams that are within five points of them in the standings.  Moving up in the standings should be secondary…

I feel like it was a win-win situation. Wings got 2 points and you get to complain about it.

Heaven forbid the Wings ever stop giving up late game-tying goals so their opponent can salvage at least a point out of it, especially divisional and conference opponents.

I’m not thrilled to give Montreal a point, but realistically if the Wings takes care of their own business by getting 2 points as often as possible other teams getting a point here and there shouldn’t matter.

Let’s hope it sticks this time because a lot of people were talking about the Wings embracing a youth movement LAST year, and then the 2013-14 season started with Nyquist in Grand Rapids and Tatar in the press box.
