What’s Next For Petr Mrazek?

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press answers some questions, this one on Petr Mrazek.

Mrazek has struggled to adapt to the backup role, which can be challenging especially for a guy used to playing regularly. However, Mrazek has not given the Wings reason to bestow regular starts, while Jimmy Howard has. Mrazek maybe had a chance to challenge Dec. 2 at Montreal (Howard had let in 10 goals the two games prior) but he didn’t look any better than his teammates that night. In the 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday, Mrazek denied an early Tampa attack while Detroit’s skaters did little to push back. Mrazek has shown he can be elite, but he set himself back last season with his attitude.

There was no market for him this summer (as evidenced by the NHL expansion draft) and he hasn’t done anything to improve his trade value. Maybe a taker materializes in the coming weeks, as half of Mrazek’s $4 million salary is gone. Regarding Jared Coreau, he has not stood out with the Griffins in the first half (2.77 goals-against average, .906 save percentage in 25 games) and he, too, had trouble last season in the NHL when he didn’t start regularly.

Butttttt…...he should be handed the starting role.

No market and he his value is less than what it was….....what’s less than zero?

I’m sorry Pete, I had high hopes for you, but…..WTF happened?

Can you really expect a goalie to be a backup for 10 games in row and then put him in against the best team in the league and expect him to be great? Howard has been great this season, but don’t play Howard for a month, put him against Tampa and he will also allow 5 goals.

He can go be a cheaper back up somewhere else.

In what world does “he’s occasionally pretty good” a sign of being elite?

Doesn’t being elite require some sort of consistency? Mrazek’s best statistical season was when he played 9 games in 2013-14. If a goalie can’t put together a single above-average season, how can anyone possibly say he’s shown that he can be elite with a straight face?

Having a great start here and there in between a sea of mediocre starts doesn’t show signs of being elite, it shows that he’s not even consistent enough to be a backup.

So the night Mrazek shut out the Oilers didn’t warrant another start? Because Howard was given 10 of the next 11 games. And Howard lost 7 of those 10 games by the way, including losing 6 in a row.

I like how HSJ references the December 2 game in Montreal, and then the most recent Tampa game. Hmm, very conveniently overlooking December 19, when Mrazek stopped 34 of 37 shots to defeat a surging NYI team. Wasn’t that enough to earn another look HSJ? Or does that not fit your little narrative. FYI, after Mrazek’s very strong game against NYI…we went back to Howard for 7 straight games, before he ultimately got injured.

Sorry HSJ. Your Mrazek-hate is pretty obvious. Quit ignoring the fact that he’s had good performances and still not earned a follow-up. Just like Howard has had some very awful stretches, and Blashill kept going back to him.

Sorry couldn’t resist.

Mrazek will likely get a few more starts than he has been leading up to the TDL, as the team has several back to backs between now and then. If he does somewhat well in those and the Wings are out of the playoff hunt by the TDL, I think we will see Petr traded to someone looking to bolster their backup situation heading into the playoffs (or well still trying to fight for a spot if they are close). If he isn’t traded, and becomes an UFA on July 1, someone will sign him for a year at a much lower salary to see what he can do. It’s low risk at that point, someone will give him the one year show-me contract.

They have to trade Howard and Green at the trade deadline.  Howard has been good this season, good enough to give us a chance to win. But he is still not an elite goalie and if he can fetch us a couple of good picks i’d go for it.

By the way i don’t think their is a market for Howard. Around the league they don’t think he is the answer for a long playoffs run.

Giving the goal to Mrazek is the only thing to do, even though it might not bring more wins, we don’t have anybody else ! Great drafting folks !

I really doubt the Wings trade Howard without getting some lopsided trade back, like a 1st rounder plus, and with another year on his deal, that’s not happening.

Green should be gone as well, but if they’re competing that might be an Ilitch call, may want to push for post season in the new arena.

I will be shocked if anyone but Green is moved at the deadline.

Not that I wouldn’t like to see more guys go, but either no one wants them. The few other potential guys to be moved are on contracts that make it almost impossible to move.

Look at Buffalo & Ottawa and please explain why the Wings are not following their lead in tanking???

For F#@# sake!! Edmonton is gonna have ANOTHER top 5 pick, possibly Chicago & Pittsburgh too. Can you imagine one of those teams getting Dahlin!??!

If the wings somehow manage to squeak in ....FIRE EVERYONE.

Wait a minute Todd’s Oilers? HHHT used to tell us that he was the genius behind Babcock’s bench, the reason our PP was so good and bad when he left, he has to be tearing it up with that talent right?

If the wings somehow manage to squeak, are you sure the guy who signs Holland checks, same guy who would fire everyone, would be unhappy with hosting a few playoff games and the gravy revenue it brings? He does own the team and all.

No, but I did give him credit for our PP, which sucked when he left.

2 home games against Tampa (crossover so maybe Washington).

The phrase ” cutting of your nose to spite your face ” rings a bell.

Sure, it’s his team and it’s all about $$$, but Gary’s revenue sharing makes that pain a little easier.

Imagine that The wings holding out their hat to get revenue sharing from Nashville…. who’d ah thunk it…

Bad contracts and high draft picks is no way to go through life….

I don’t disagree with you at all, I’m all about a complete sell off, but we also don’t own the team.

I think “shown he can be elite” implicitly means in short stretches
- we all know his career enough that that’s sort of assumed.

In that context, he’s shown he can win big games, and stand on his
head and beat good teams and go on a run and post gaudy numbers in
stretches.

We all know he hasn’t had the opportunity and/or ability to put that
kind of play together as a starter for an entire season, let alone
more than one entire season.

I mean, he had most all of last season.

All I have to say is that will be interesting to see what happens with him. I think he will stay in NA and get another opportunity, obviously not in a starter role. Maybe a chance at a more evening split backup roll or end up back in the minors for a jaunt. Then who knows. It’s a wild cards. The right situation, people..who knows.

Jimmy is being rode like he is a superstar or a goalie in the 90’s.

Between his attitude last year and an awful team defence, PM was set up to fail big time. He had so many goals go in off his own D, it really seems t have shaken him. Then, his own “stare downs” led to negative vibes, it seems, and he lost his poise.

I’d still keep him over Jimmy if a trade for Jimmy was feasible, something that’s highly unlikely this season. Jimmy is a couple of years away from retirement and the Wings have few prospects for the position. So, getting PM back on track makes sense for a whole lot of reasons. Won’t happen but…...

Uhh what talent?

After McJesus and Draisaitl, they don’t have much.

RNH is a borderline 2C at this point (-10 and 43pts in 2017 when they damn near made it, in comparison to Nielsen’s -19 and 41pts in the same year though he is having a bit of a resurgence)

They traded their 2nd leading scorer to make room for the wonder twins’ obnoxious extensions last season after trading Taylor freaking Hall to playoff-bound NJ for what is basically a 3-4D

Lucic was always more grit than skill

Same with Maroon (takes me back to Abdelkader’s 20G+ season where Pav would bounce pucks off him)

All Stromes have been a disappointment so far for all teams

Letestu is basically a 4C at this point (he also sealed their loss to Anaheim last playoffs)

After that, you’re not only at the 16pts in 44 games territory, you’re looking at your leading scorer on defense… KRIS RUSSELL

Nurse looks more bust than boom

Khaira’s game is more tragic than his ridiculous name

Kassian is a less skilled Maroon

Puljujarvi is more bust than boom

Klefbom seemingly forgot who he is

This isn’t McLellan’s fault. This is the fault of their godawful GM who traded away their best secondary scoring in Hall and Eberle away to basically make their team worse.

They’re basically us now, but for different reasons.
