What Options Does Holland Have When It Comes To Nyquist?

via Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

If Nyquist plays one more game in the NHL, he would have to be put on waivers if sent down again, and the Wings aren’t risking that. General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press after the game that “we are talking options.”

via Bill Roose of the Wings' website,

“He's obviously got skill, knows how to play and he can be an important guy going ahead,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “That's what I would have done if I was him. We'll see what happens. It's called money.”

That’s why I hit the jump.  What are the implications to the team if he stays?

He’ll be sent back down. I don’t see any other recourse.

See you in January, Gus. Good luck making the team next year.

Oh, and by the way, tie goes to the veteran. Those two goals last night shall henceforth be credited to Dan “Daniel” Cleary.

Sorry, them’s the breaks.

What a joke. Here comes the spin machine. Holland/Babcock are probably red faced as hell after what happened last night, knowing beforehand that they would send him back to GR. Now they have to find a way to justify it in front of a crowd of people ready to explode.

Holland/Babcock couldn’t have been happy to see him score. What was the Babcock quote before the game about proving yourself and earning your keep and then you get to play? What else could Nyquist do last night? So if he gets sent down, Babcock is full of s#!t.

What is the ramification of demoting Cleary? Seriously. He doesn’t deserve to be here. ANOTHER game of him doing nothing while the guy he bumped off the roster excelled.

Seriously, though. I know it’s one game. But Gus looks like a 60 point player. Tons of speed. Scrappy. Goes to the dirty areas. He’s a really, really good player.

“Hey, you saw what happened tonight.  Gus scored two goals, but Danny played real good too,” said Babcock.  “You saw him flubbing perfect setup after perfect setup from Pavel Datsyuk.  How do you choose between these two guys?”

Does anybody miss Weiss or Alfredsson?  Geez.  Move somebody, Kenny.  Or just waive somebody.  Do it.  Show us you care about the Red Wings being good.

60 would be tough.  Z had, I think, 40 in his rookie season on a much more dominant offensive team, and I’m not going to say Gus is as good as Hank.

Yeah, I really don’t understand why Babcock said that. He has nothing to gain and everything to lose by making that comment. Then again, I can’t really be all that mad at Holland and Babcock at this point. If it’s a money thing, it’s a money thing. Not much you can do about it now.

Cleary really is waste.
So frustrating to watch. What the hell is the justification for him playing on the top line?
Pretty much anyone on the team would be better in that spot. Put Abdelkader there again, or even Miller, if Tatar is not an option.

Because he is Mike Babcock and these are the things he says. He says that all the time. Gus is gonna get sent down, there is simply no other option. No other team is going to help us out, they know Holland *#$%@& up by over-crowding the roster with washed up 3rd/4th liners and they are not going to throw him a bone. His attempts at trading Tootoo and Eaves failed obviously showing that NO ONE wants the players Holland signs.
What joke.

I can’t wait for Holland to announce the extension for Cleary he was promised for taking a “discount” to come back this year. Isn’t it in January he can sign it?

Yeah, but if they can get any consistency and Nyquist stays on a line with Z…

Yeah, I really don’t understand why Babcock said that.

It’s entirely possible that Babcock is as frustrated with the situation as anyone else is.  Maybe he was the architect of Cleary’s return and maybe he wasn’t, or maybe he figured that Ken Holland would do something -anything- to ensure that Nyquist didn’t spend the first quarter of the season in Grand Rapids…

Capgeek tells me that waiving Cleary would let us bury him in the minors (if no one claimed him) and support Nyquist’s hit when DeKeyser comes back from LTIR.  For what it’s worth (nothing, as they won’t waive Cleary.)

Gods, what a clusterfaux the Samuelsson and Cleary signings were.

And the signing of Glass Joe Colaiacovo!

I have finally begun to believe that the league has evolved in a big way since the 2004-2005 lockout. Holland/Bowman/Babcock have always had a process to fill their 3rd and 4th lines with “crafty” veterans who could provide structure to those lines, kill penalties, and chip in goals. Since there has been a cap (and it has been amplified this year because the cap lowered significantly from last year to this year), teams have had to invest their money in their top six and top four and fill out the bottom 8 with more young guys, specialists, and cheap veterans.

Holland has watered down the top six while investing too much in the bottom six. I’d love to see the roster breakdown from a salary standpoint for all teams’ 3rd and 4th lines. I have a strong suspicion that the Wings’ 3rd and 4th lines would be among the most expensive in the league.

In this day and age, I believe it is better to put some unknowns out on the 3rd and 4th lines and invest in your top six/top four. The Wings have spread the talent too thin and tried to be deep - except that even though all these guys can play roles, no one besides select few can actually score. It is time to adopt a new philosophy.

You mean “glass body” Colaiacovo. It isn’t just his jaw that gets injured when someone looks at him sideways.

I’d trade Quincey and our 1st round pick to a team for a younger defensive defenseman like Kulikov in Florida. That would free up 1mill and get rid of our worst d man. Id rather have Ouellet in than Quincey.

First of all who would want anyone’s worst D-man.
Second, this trade would mean Quincey cost us 3 draft picks (4th rounder and 2 1st rounders) But then again, maybe it is time to just cut your loses and move on.

Trade Quincey for a bag of supper and cut your losses and promote Ouellet. He is better defensively and we need a offensive and defensive d man on every line. Run these lines on D:
Kron-Big E
Kindl-DK (Lash when injured)
Smith-X Man

It almost has to be Nyquist back to the AHL or someone goes on IR ... leave it to Sammy to be the picture of health when we need him to continue his injury trend.

But organizationally, can they afford another veteran in GR costing valuable ‘ripening’ time to the top prospects in the organization?

What about the core AHL vets they have down there? This can’t be playing too well in the locker room. The Griffins are scratching 4 or 5 healthy guys every night now and they can only play 5 or so veterans per game. This really is amazingly poor planning by Holland. Does he want bitterness spreading from vets to kids in GR?

I don’t think Nyquist is a savior or can even keep up this scoring pace. But the guy is a winner, has been at every level and he will be a key element to a winning team, just like he proved he could be last spring.

It’s crazy that they had so little organizational fate in the guy (and their development system) that they re-upped Miller and Cleary then signed Weiss and Alfredsson. All before they knew that they could move out some contracts.

So dumb. It reminds me of the stories from the bad old days when you’s have GM’s like Ned Harkness trading away Gary Unger cause the guy wouldn’t cut his hair.

I think even they understand that they would look like total idiots if they send him down after the way he played and the team needs an offensive threat.

Nyquist and Jarnkrok have that EuroTwin chemistry that 40 + 13 have. Bury Cleary in the minors and make a trade to free up space for Kalle.

Discussing the fact that the management of the team f…ed up the roster does not make them evil. 2 signings in particular is what made things worse, Sammy and Cleary. IMO, especially Cleary, because when they re-signed him there was already a log jam at winger position.
