WDIV teams up with Wings alum Shawn Burr to promote bone marrow donor registry

Red Wings alumnus Shawn Burr recently found a bone marrow donor match who will help him battle acute myeloid leukemia, and on Wednesday night,  WDIV posted a profile of Burr while announcing that it’s partnering with the Shawn Burr Foundation to help add people to a national bone marrow registry today at five LaFontaine Automotive dealerships.

Here’s the cheek swab’s worth of important parts from Dr. Frank McGeorge’s report which chronicles Burr’s battle and his charitable foundation’s ongoing goal of raising awareness of the necessity of bone marrow donation:

Burr is lucky. He found a match and he will get the transplant soon. But he wasn’t about to stop. His generous nature would guide his mission as the honorary chair in collaboration between the Michigan Dental Association and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

“What we’re gonna do is called, ‘Take a Bite Out of Cancer,’” he said.

The goal is to get people on the bone marrow registry through kits available in dental offices across the state of Michigan.

“You can actually do a swab, get put on the registry. There is absolutely no cost,” he said. “A swab is just a stick in the mouth, and for a hockey player to be involved with that, it makes sense, you know?” he joked.

Burr knows the more people in the registry means it’s less of a long shot in finding a match for cancer patients such as himself.

“Someone that gets swabbed at the dentist’s office is going to save someone’s life,” he said. “And that’s, I mean, it only takes one person that’s going to save somebody’s life, and I think that’s kind of cool to be a part of something like that.”

The “Take a Bite Out of Cancer” drive is targeted to enroll 20,000 new people in the bone marrow registry which would make it the largest bone marrow drive ever in the world.

Local 4 is teaming up with LaFontaine Automotive Group on Thursday for an all-day bone marrow drive. The drive will be held at five LaFontaine dealerships.

And here’re the details thereof, from WDIV:

Local auto dealer LaFontaine Automotive is spreading a message of hope with a free bone marrow drive to help fight cancer. The drive is set for Thursday, May 10, at five of the company’s dealership locations.

It gives visitors the opportunity to join the bone marrow registry. Free bone marrow kits will be donated by DKMS, a bone marrow donor center. The test uses a simple mouth swab to help find matches for patients in need. There are certain requirements for donors, including being between the age of 18 and 55.

LaFontaine’s bone marrow drive correlates with the group’s Business 2 Business Expo.  It will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, at the LaFontaine dealership on W. Highland Road in Highland.

The following are the participating locations for the bone marrow drive:

• LaFontaine Cadillac Buick GMC, 4000 W. Highand Road in Highland, from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.

• LaFontaine Toyota Scion Kia Suzuki Hyundai, 2027 S. Telegraph Road in Dearborn, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

• LaFontaine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, 900 W. Michigan in Saline, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

• LaFontaine Chevrolet, 7120 Dexter Ann Arbor Road in Dexter, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

•  LaFontaine Buick GMC, 500 Auto Mall Drive in Ann Arbor, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m
