The fact that Tootoo can’t crack this lineup is a real testament to how awful that signing was. And let’s not get into a “hindsight is 20/20.” A lot of people thought that signing was brutal - for the term and the dollars - and this makes the signing look even worse. Someone needs to ask Ken Holland flat-out: “Jordin Tootoo can’t crack the lineup with like 8 regular players out; what about Jordin Tootoo (after being benched during Nashville’s run during the previous season) made you go out and pay almost $2M per season for 3 years?”

The truth is, Holland signed Tootoo hoping he could turn him into a Luke Glendening PITA-type pest.  Instead, Tootoo just remained Tootoo, and Glendening came along at a much cheaper price point.

That absolutely doomed Tootoo.

It was an awful, awful signing (just one in a series of awful moves Holland has now made).  And yes, the vast majority of Red Wings fans knew and said it was a bad signing at the time.  Just like the Quincey trade.  Just like the Cleary signing.  Just like the Samuelsson signing.  And just like the Legwand trade.

The whole “Wings braintrust is smarter than you” argument doesn’t honestly work when fans keep second-guessing their moves… and keep being proven right for second-guessing them.

Primis, with regards to Holland less than stellar pro acquisitions of the past few years, I still think that one of the least covered stories of 2013 was how most of the very successful amateur scouting staff was changed, yet the pro scouts who would have advise Holland on some of his signings mostly, if not all, remained in place. Something at the pro level just leaves a lot to be desired.
