Turns out the ‘diggers’ were right: Red Wings out of the Lecavalier sweepstakes

It turns out that MLive's Ansar Khan and the Free Press's Helene St. James were on to something:

Lol.

There are a lot of examples of going long term contracts just to get a player for this year have disastrous and regreattable cosequences that made the GMs look stupid.

Vinny didn’t look like that much of a risk, but I can’t fault anyone for not giving into a 5 year contract demand to a 33 year old.

why?  Holland has no problem handing them out to other players, along with a NMC on top of it.  I don’t get why in 5yrs the guy is going to be a healthy scratch.  Vinny will always look like a bargain as long as Franzen is here to live out his contract.

We don’t have a clue why Lecavalier decided to rule us out (if the Sportsnet report is accurate).  It could be term and/or dollars.  It might be that he doesn’t want to play in the same division as Tampa.  It might be that he and his wife wanted to be closer to home.

The problem is that, absent Holland and Lecavalier actually telling us honestly what negotiations occurred, we’ll never know the reason why.  If it was term and dollars and that we’ve been accurately informed that Holland wouldn’t go higher than 2 years at $5 mil, then I’m disappointed in Holland.  He could have done better than that and still not handcuffed us going forward.  That being said, we won’t ever know.

sure we do, they gave little to no effort and found reasons to criticize his game, concerned about his “pace” while their former asst GM who watched the same player, thought it was worth it.

This is a little disappointing, but at least we know early enough to focus on other free agent targets.

At least it’s not like last year, where we were held up for several days while waiting on Suter to decide and all of our other targets signed elsewhere while we waited.

Here’s hoping we re-sign Brunner and can get a solid replacement for Filppula.

Now what, Kenny? Weiss? Hahaha. Yeah ok. God forbid he makes a trade. Does he even remember how that works? Forget any UFAs. They aren’t coming to Detroit. Cleary and Sammy will be the big add ons. And letting Flip walk for zilch is just beyond stupid. That being said, watch Kenny overpay to sign that useless sack.

why did we let jim go to dallas again? we should have sent ken packing. He is good at building talent but some of us want to win now. Not 5 year of mediocrity while he builds the next young dynasty. he should have just offered lecavalier what he wanted. Now were gonna lose brunner/fifi and not get lecavalier. 8th place here we come again.

I posted this to Twitter a bit ago.

Some fiddling on CapGeek.  If the Wings keep Sammy and Bert (exercise no buyouts), let Brunner and Fil both go, keep Quincey, Colaiacovo, and Tootoo, and just re-sign their own remaining RFA’s (Nyquist, Smith, Andersson), they’ll have only a bit over roughly $2m of cap space left.

It’s a mess folks.  Even with Fil, Cleary, and Brunner walking, that’s the situation.  It’s not pretty.

Even if you aren’t all up and in the Lecavalier or Weiss business, there’s plenty to be worried about w/ no moves happening period.

That’s the only possibility, seeing as those are also the people who seemed to know before the rest of us that Detroitwas out of the running.

There’s no possible reason we could assume they actually, you know, know what they’re talking about sometimes.

MAYBE we’ll Uncle Mike bump up Nike and Mr. Andersson to the second line (with Mule on their wing).

Great.  So just like the last several years we’ll have a bunch of third liners in the top six…

Kronwall got seven years.
Jimmy Howard got six.

Hell, Kindl got four years just a couple days ago, and while it’s not 5+ it’s two more than they supposedly offered Vinny.

If you and I have learned anything in the last five minutes, it’s that it’s unreasonable to wait until we actually know why Vinny isn’t coming before blaming the Wings management.

It appears to be headed that way, Garth.  It’s not a comforting thought.  Granted it was only 20-some odd games that Nike and Mr. Andersson played together, but their line was probably the most productive after Dangles and Zata.

Now they have a whole season to show what they can do.  It’s a scenario that’ll put me on edge, but I’m willing to give them a chance.  Time for the boys to grow up.

screw him.

UFA’s need to want to be a Wing as much as the Wings want them. We are who we are (22 years and running…) because we don’t “outbid”, we don’t make moves just to make them, we value flexibility which is why we are always able to make pitches at UFA’s in the first place. If a UFA doesn’t respect all of that and seek the Wings out, than they don’t belong in Detroit. Ye of little faith think we will not improve by not impulsively acting like other teams, yet time and time again you have been proven wrong. Nobody expected us to get where we got this season… and to win a Calder Cup on top of it?

I’m not saying Kenny can do no wrong, in fact doing wrong is part of the job since it’s all calculated gambles (Dallas Drake comes in and seals the deal while Modano comes in and unseals his wrist… both were worth the risk though). But while Kenny makes mistakes and sometimes has to scramble to make lemonade out of lemons (i.e.. Sammy… who, fingers crossed, will be bought out in a day or two), you can’t argue with the results. And not only are we set to stay relevant for years to come, but we are set to improve dramatically each year as our young team rounds into form. I just don’t see reason for such pessimism every time someone signs somewhere else. There are other longterm ramifications to consider and the right people will sign with us eventually.

People seem to think that in some objective bubble Nill thinks Vinny is worth 5 for 5 and Kenny doesn’t, despite the fact they don’t manage in an objective bubble and Vinny’s value is very different depending on what team you are managing. The 5 for 5 might fit nicely into Dallas’ future plans whereas the Wings have some budding potential stars to worry about. It’s two teams at two different stages of development (there’s a reason they just hired a new GM) with very different concerns. Not comparable.

The problem isn’t term. Heck, I don’t know what’s the problem.

Allow me to beat a dead horse, but can please somebody try to explain to me why Detroit didn’t go after Semin last year?

We thought his asking price was too high: he signed for $6M (a little more than our cap space). We thought he wanted long term: he signed for one season.

WHAT WAS THE RISK ON THAT DEAL??

Why no interest on Semin on those terms? Why no interest on Redden, when the defense was one injury away from dressing RWBill, when he signed a 20 cent contract?

You serious?  The Wings offer wasn’t even compatible, it wasn’t even on the same page as the others.  Other teams were offering more term and more money.  If the Wings had a similar offer to all the other teams, and it was just about money I would join you.  The guy came out and said Detroit was his favorite team, he loved the games of both Zetterberg and Datsyuk and all the Wings brass could do is give him 1/2hr and leak to the media the concerns they had in his game.  Then leak that they could not get above 2yrs and couldn’t get to the 5mm dollar amount being thrown out there.  If by saying :screw him” you mean Ken Holland, I agree. But I know that’s not who you were referring to.  If the Wings had given any effort at all to signing him I’d be more insulted, but Lecavalier would have essentially had to REALLY want to play here to take less money and term than what other teams are offering.  If this was pre 2005 when the Wings were fielding an All Star team each season or had Lidstrom in his prime I could see them having that attitude, but not now.

That’s all speculation that was made before this news broke.  Just because there were concerns doesn’t justify your assumption.  It sounds to me like Vinny ruled us out, not vice versa.  He might not like the weather in Detroit for all we know.
