Like I said boys, the summer can’t some soon enough, done with this season and I hope the wings miss the playoffs. We could get a 12th overall pick or something, or maybe even 1 overall.

The veterans run this team, that much is painfully obvious. They ran Babcock out of town, I wonder who is next?

If AA and Mantha get Glendening minutes then I’m not all that angry about that fourth line.

I mean, they won’t but that’s a pretty good skating line that could actually be kind of dangerous.

Given how bad our lines have been, almost literally any change would have been welcomed.  Ordinary men would struggle to come up with a change that would have made things unambiguously worse.

But Jeff Blashill is no ordinary man.  He is a pioneer, a visionary.  Until now, no man had ever had the flexibility, the stick-to-it-ivnesss, the sheer back-breaking cussedness to forge beyond the sphincter and see this far up into his own colon.

This is bats&%t crazy usage. Mantha shouldn’t be in Detroit if he is going to be on the 4th line. Richards should be out for Jurco and Smith should be in for E, with Kronner on the third pair. Unfortunately, we have seen this before….

Posted by Chip4Pips on 03/31/16 at 11:48 AM ET

I thought the stipulation for Mantha was that he would only play on the top-six if called up? What happened to that? Alas, we’ll never know as the “diggers” will keep asking their superficial questions.

Let’s let HSJ write a poll:

“Who is to blame for Mantha being on the fourth line?”

1)  Our defensemen, who inexplicably aren’t as good as Lidstrom;
2)  Ryan Suter’s wife, who totally ROBBED us we got off the plane KNOWING we had him!;
3)  Datsyuk for wanting Helm to be his best friend forever, just as he previously insisted on playing with Abdelkader and Holmstrom, that Pavel, never wants a skill player unless it’s Hossa or Z, definitely not just saying the polite thing in public;
4)  Nyquist regressing which NO ONE could have possibly predicted, meaning it’s no one’s fault;
5)  Larkin running out of steam, which NO ONE could have possibly predicted, meaning it’s no one’s fault;
6)  Other, provided you agree that “other” does not include certified hockey genius Ken Holland or his handpicked coach Jeff Blashill, though it might conceivably include the “team” that advises Holland because mistakes can be made collectively not by individuals; given that this “other” may be a collective however do not expect any accountability or course correction.

I think this one might have finally pushed me over the edge.

Yeah, something needs to be done about Blashill…

Kid is doing great and our offense is finally clicking , so… let’s put him on the 4th line now and bring a useless, extremely-slow-footed and undynamic vet into his place.  I’m sure THAT will work out well for everyone involved…

Posted by Primis on 03/31/16 at 11:59 AM ET

I am sure Richards has complained.  He has probably also made the valid point that he’s been good when paired with Datsyuk and that the team needs offense.

Which is why he should be part of a line with Datsyuk and Mantha with Helm on the fourth line where he belongs.

That is assuming we are keeping together the abomination that is our third line.

Remember the old Packers joke, before the coming of the Favre?

How many Packer fans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
5.  One to screw it in, and 4 to recall how great the old one was.

That’s where this ship seems to be going.

What a freaking mess of a lineup.

AA and MO would be better of in GR getting a lot of mins on pretty good team.

Is Blashill panicking or does he want to lose?  Apparently he will achieve both.

Maybe protecting himself. If we miss the playoffs (which is unfortunately pretty much a certainty at this point), it would be much easier for him to tell KH that he played all the veterans all those key minutes and they just did not perform, so next year I am going to play the young guys. Blashill thinking might be if Kron/Richards/Z screw up, it’s on them and if AA and Mantha screw up, it’s on the coach for trusting them too much, too early.

The sad thing is that even if Smith plays tomorrow, he would be replacing Marchenko and we have at least 2 dmen who are a lot worse.

The biggest issue I have with this is Blashill totally contradicting himself. Remember before Mantha was pulled up, he said he wouldn’t bring Mantha up unless he was playing in the top six? Remember when he was actually called up, Blashill said he would be playing in the top six? What’s the flip flop for? Richards isn’t scoring goals, and he sure is not going to park his ass in front of the net or at least drive it like Mantha has been doing. Both of Mantha’s goals have been a foot away from the crease, which has been such a necessary thing to add to the lineup because the team has lacked it for a good chunk of the season. Yet, he wants to add Richards to the top six which has not been a success at all this season. It’s flabbergasting, and his reasoning is it’s because Richards’ experience. His experience has not added much to the lineup, and now all of a sudden Blash wants to contradict himself to add experience to the top six? Helm and Datsyuk have around twenty years combined experience, that’s not enough for one line? I cannot wait until Richards is off this team, but knowing Holland he will bring in another “savvy veteran” in the offseason to replace him.

I wouldn’t be upset if the 4th line actually received more minutes, but we all know that the line will receive 9-10 minutes of even strength, while Glendening gets 4-6 minutes of penalty killing time. I am honestly fed up with Blashill this season, he needs the offseason to learn from his mistakes just as much as I need it to cool down from my position of damn near losing all faith in the guy’s competence.

I read that second sentence and knew the comments section would be blowing up. I don’t get it.  Our defense is obviously our weak point.  We can’t fix that with the pieces we have.  So go on the offensive.  Give the guys that are scoring the minutes and play them where they’ve had success.  Then maybe, just maybe we can out score our defensive mistakes.  There are plenty of things to be fixed but switching Mantha and Richards isn’t one of them.

I think I may have found the problem with this team this year. Abbey has 112PMs. Only last season did he average over 1PM per game. This is a huge deviation from his past performance. His increase in penalties must have an impact on his chemistry with Z and Larkin.

He only has 4 fighting majors. He’s second at -14. I have to wonder how many PPGs he has caused. Is that a stat that someone can dig up?

I really like Abbey. He has great vision and is underrated as a passer. This is just plain odd. Maybe he should be back on a line with Pav?
