There will be beer in the Big House as Michigan legislature approves Winter Classic liquor license

From the Associated Press:

The Michigan Legislature has approved sale of alcohol at Michigan Stadium on New Year’s Day when the home of Wolverines’ football arena hosts a game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Senate passed the proposal Wednesday, following up on the House’s action of May 24.

The league made alcohol sales a condition for holding the outdoor NHL Winter Classic game at the Ann Arbor stadium Jan. 1, 2013. AnnArbor.com (http://bit.ly/KVs4Qy ) says the NHL is paying the university $3 million for the stadium’s use.

Officials say the game could break a Guinness World Record as the most-attended hockey game ever. The record was set at Michigan Stadium in 2010 when 104,173 attended a Michigan State-Michigan game.

Our long statewide nightmare is over.

What a RELIEF that over 100k people will be crammed into a stadium and at least a good 50,000 of them will be able to be completely wasted by the second intermission.

No, there’s no possible way this could backfire and reflect poorly on the state or anything, no…

This was as done a deal as the over-under on the first drunk Leaf fan fighting a drunk Wings fan taking place immediately after they get out of their cars in the parking lot, which is totally going to happen.

It’s not that big a deal. Kids and especially alums come into the Big House uber-hammered to make sure the buzz lasts, and there have always been ways that the sneaky can get liquor in, even in our twitchy, pat-down-happy world, so this just shifts some of the burden to a place that will be jam frickin’ packed with representatives from the Michigan State Police, Washtenaw County Sheriff, Ann Arbor Police and University of Michigan Department of Public Safety.

Not too worried about it other than the fact that there are always Leaf fans who try to start brawls…and the occasional moron Wings fan that does the same (drunkenness makes equals of fan bases, all of the lesser kind).
