The Wings This Week

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Here are five things to watch for this week:

Young forwards in a funk

Andreas Athanasiou has gone 11 games without a goal, during which he has two assists and a minus-11 rating. He’s been centering the fourth line, with Martin Frk for the past six games and a variety of other wingers, as they’ve been using 11 forwards and seven defensemen a lot. Athanasiou probably won’t be moved up to the top nine anytime soon, since coach Jeff Blashill likes his match-up line of Frans Nielsen centering Darren Helm and Luke Glendening.

Frk has no goals and two assists in six games since returning from a groin injury. He has gotten some good looks on the power play but has missed the net a few times and has just seven shots. He is trying to find a balance between releasing his shot fast and hard or taking a little off to get better accuracy.

Anthony Mantha has gone six games without a point.

——-They had recent discussions with Edmonton (for a fourth- or fifth-round pick).
——-Does it make any sense to trade Mrzazek fior a 4th round pick? To free up money to sign our RFA forwards next summer?

His cap hit comes off the books anyway.

This would allow us to get something for him in return when we don’t qualify him.

So if the young forwards in a funk, which happens to young guys from time to time, what do we call this stretch for NyQuist producing 2 goals and 2 assists in the last 10 games, 3 of which came in 1 game, meaning 1 point in 9 games, and a fat arse 0 in the last 4? I would say raw sewage. But hey, let’s continue to let him slide right by and not focus on his inability to produce.

At least Tatar has decided to wash the stink of him the past two games, but he’s in the same 4 point boat.

Yes, but at the same time there’s no real hurry. As long as he’s traded at some point before pinhead can re-sign him, it’s a win.

First of all there’s been no consistent fourth line, not with the 11F 7D on the bench. Secondly, we’ve only scored 21 goals in the last 11 games, being hypothetical and everyone resulted in a double assist, that’s 63 points for 18 players or 3.5 points per player divided equally. Under 2 goals per game average as a team, which is terrible considering our goalies approximate 2.5 goals against average. We have a fast team that should be rushing the net, not playing the constant offensive zone perimeter pass method just to try and set up Frk. Our PP has been less effective trying to do just that, although at point we don’t waste as much time. 50 games left to prove the process.

I’d call it a funk as well. The entire team has been in a funk for the last 10 games. Abby has 2 points. Larkin has 4. Mantha has 3. There’s more than enough blame to go around.

I much prefer Tatar to Nyquist. When I watch Nyquist play, he infuriates me 80% of the time. He takes far too long to make decisions, and he often refuses to go to the hard areas of the ice. Tatar loses the puck sometimes trying to do too much, but he will at least battle, he goes to the front of the net more than Nyquist, and I just prefer him overall. He seems like he has a fighting spirit. Nyquist seems like a wet napkin.

how many bad games did Hank have before we all started complaining about how bad he was?

but has missed the net a few times

Nothing to see here. It’s just because he is a rookie.

I’d rather risk playing Jimmy a lot hoping a team with a weak goalie tandem will want him, freeing up even more cap space…....for Tavares? For a certain swedish defenseman?

100% agree, goal scorers go to the net, Nyquist can often been seen curling away from the net, I can’t stand it.
