The NHL’s reasoning for no supplemental discipline on Cowen via Garrioch

Bruce Garrioch, totally not rubbing it in:

Jared Cowen was back in his familiar spot on the Senators’ blueline against Carolina here Sunday night.

Much to the displeasure of the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings wanted the book thrown at the club’s defenceman after they claimed top centre Pavel Datsyuk suffered a concussion on an uncalled elbow to the head in the third period of Ottawa’s 4-2 victory Saturday in Detroit.

NHL spokesman John Dellapina said VP of safety Brendan Shanahan had a thorough look at the elbow by Cowen with seven minutes left in the game and deemed that the contact was “accidental” and “inadvertent”.

“The NHL reviewed it and said there was no penalty for it so he’s playing,” said coach Paul MacLean before the game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

It helped Cowen had no past history and Shanahan felt the incident was similar to the one last week when Dennis Seidenberg caught Ottawa winger Bobby Ryan with an elbow and didn’t give the Boston defencemen any discipline.

It was an uncontrolled reaction to a player making a move on him. He instinctively stuck his arm out to try to get a piece of Datsyuk, and hit his head.

That’s exactly the kind of reflex the league needs to condition out of players. This makes no sense. Give him SOMETHING.

Absolutely, and Seidenberg should have gotten something too.  The fact that he plays for the Evil Garden Gnome’s closest ally might have something to do with the Seidenberg deal.  I guess there may be a similar relationship with the owner of the bunch of hatchet men who played against Detroit last night.

I was saying this during the game:

Watching Niklas Kronwall and Brian Lashoff of late has been eye-opening because they do exactly what you’re supposed to do: they give their opponents 2 or 3 hard shoves, between the shoulder blades and the butt. They do not try to take their opponents’ knees out, they do not attempt to enroll in massage school while cross-checking their opponents’ backs, and they do not attempt to launch their opponents’ upper bodies or faces into the boards. They simply attempt to separate opponents from the puck while limiting their physical force to what is necessary to do so.

That’s what checking is about. Not this stick-your-knee-or-shoulder-or-elbow-or-something out shit.

Spot on George. The stick flick he gave Ott on the breakaway was very Lidstromesque and made me smile. Lids would jab at the player’s elbow with his stick causing a missed shot or the puck skittering into the corner. With no penalty of course.

You *can* toss off a punishing check that beats the hell out of somebody, but it’s more effective when you just take the damn puck from ‘em.

“It helped Cowen had no past history “

Haha, uh okay, he’s 22 yrs old and has played in 120 odd games so he’ll have a good decade or more to go for Chris Pronger type hits and maybe someday like Pronger became a repeat suspension offender two or times over if he applies himself, lol.

Good job Shanny, keep up the good work.

On the bright side, now we’ve got Cowen as a guy to hate in our new Division and Conference.  We needed some new bad guys.

I liked it when we hated Brad Marchand, Chris Neil and Steve Ott for just being assholes instead.
