St. James: soon-to-be-former Red Wing Ian White’s lockout comments instigated the split

MLive's Ansar Khan spoke to soon-to-be-ex-Red Wing Ian White during locker room clean-out day, and noted that Wings coach Mike Babcock held no ill will toward a player who lost the coaches and management staff's trust when he followed up the, "I haven't asked for a trade yet, but my agent and I have talked to the team" spiel with poor play...But White made it known that he's officially outta here while speaking with the Free Press's Helene St. James as well...

White didn’t appear in any playoff games, and hadn’t played since April 7. “It’s somewhat doubtful they’re going to bring back a guy who’s not going to play,” White said. “Probably the most unfortunate part of our business is moving around all the time, switching teams. I loved playing here.”

St. James reveals that White, who bounced around from Toronto to Calgary, Carolina, San Jose and then Detroit over the year-and-a-half prior to signing with the Wings, may have dug his own hole in matching Jimmy Devellano's tale of cattle and ranchers with a lockout jab of his own:

One of the most vocal critics of commissioner Gary Bettman during last fall’s labor dispute, White’s comment in November that, “I personally think he’s an idiot,” did not go over well with the Wings organization, with the prevalent feeling one of distaste that White’s name-calling reflected poorly on the club.

Sometimes guys come to DET, and it doesn’t work out, and I feel bad for them.

And then there’s Ian White who came to DET, got to play alongside the greatest defensive partner EVER…. and apparently then decided he didn’t need to work ever again.  Forget his mouth, his lack of heart and spirit on the ice this season spoke much more than his mouth ever could have.

I’d rather have someone with an opinion that would challenge things instead of just letting things happen.  I think it was stupid that we benched a veteran, who we could have used instead of the youngsters.  Not to mention, now we are going to get next to nothing for him because of the negative spin
we have put on him.  How can you blame someone for having an opinion.

You didn’t watch E-52 much this season, didn’t you?

White stood out as absolutely brutal on a team full of d-men who were brutal to watch at times.  He was impotent offensively, and absolutely and completely lost defensively.  He got his chances and time and time again blew them.  White wasn’t a rookie or youngster learning like Smith, Kindl, Lashoff, or even Ericsson still, he’s supposed to a vet.  Lashoff, who was absolutely in over his head most of the time, *still* looked lots safer than White.

I will criticize Babcock plenty on who he sits and dresses, but… I don’t see how anyone could have watched White’s play and then possibly questioned why he sat.  This year he was one of the worst d-men to wear the winged wheel we’ve seen in ages, and that’s including luminaries such as Anders Eriksson, Maxim Kuznetsov, Dmitri Bykov, Anders Myrvold, Ole Kristian-Tollefson, and Uwe Krupp.

Funny, I was reading that Bruins-Pens entry. Nothing unexpected from my standpoint tongue wink

Lebda.  Never forget Lebda.  When we curse at Kindl, or Smith, or Lashoff…remember Lebda.

And that one guy we kept over Quincy that wound up in Winnipeg.

Derek Meech. And Lebda dropped the Cup. I was there. Never forgave him.

Ian White and Tootoo rotting on the bench were dumb mistakes by Babs. Kindl and Ericsson will never be better defensively or offensively than those two combined.
Hope 2013-2014 Red Wings all soft roster does well against B’s, Philly, NYI, Pitts, NYR etc…..
Lots of PP opps while half the roster goes on the IR. This is the bettman salary cap era not 1997.

Roster us some “bruisers” Kenny for pete sakes and don’t let Babs healthy scratch some of them come playoff time like he did with Toots saying he would of been basically worthless for us in the playoffs with his style of play.

Boston swept the Pens rosteringa TON of goons. Most of their defenseman are guys that just block shots.

Watch and learn.

Wait, am I reading this right? Ian White and Jordin Tootoo are better, offensively and defensively, than Kindl and Ericsson?

KINDL ALONE WAS BETTER THAN THOSE TWO!

I don’t think his comment reflected poorly upon the Wings organization in the slightest. ‘Lil Gary *is* an idiot. He was just telling it like it is.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike Ian White. His remarks certainly aren’t one of them. Let’s focus less on his mouth and more on his play.
