St. James checks in with Ken Holland regarding Alexey Marchenko

The Free Press's Helene St. James checked in with Ken Holland regarding the waiving of Alexey Marchenko:

Marchenko has been a healthy scratch the last four games. He missed time in November and December because of a shoulder injury. In the meantime, the Wings called up Nick Jensen, and he grabbed a job. Jensen’s biggest assets are his ability to skate and his compete level, and it’s especially his speed that has made him aa good partner for Niklas Kronwall.

“We’ve got a lot of young defensemen, and with Brendan Smith healthy and Jimmy Howard on the horizon, have to make moves for the cap and 23-man roster,” general manager Ken Holland told the Free Press.

If Marchenko clears by noon Saturday, he will be assigned to Grand Rapids. The Wings would gain $950,000 in salary cap relief against his cap hit of $1.45 million. Marchenko 25, is signed through next season.

There are likely to be more moves ahead, unless there are new injuries. Steve Ott (shoulder) is close to returning -- maybe as soon as Tuesday -- and Howard (knee) is also close, pending how he feels after playing Saturday in Grand Rapids. If he feels good, the plan is he plays again with the Griffins on Wednesday, then meets the Wings in Columbus, where they play Feb. 11. Jared Coreau can be sent back to Grand Rapids to make room for Howard, but it may also require another move to free up enough salary cap space.

St. James continues...

During the Griffins’ Calder Cup season, Blashill played Jensen tons of minutes in key situations and he was a big part of their Cup win. Sproul seems to be the best offensive defenseman prospect, but like Smith and others, he has to get the decision making down. He has size and he’s also a righty. Sproul can walk the blueline with the best of them on the powerplay in the limited time I’ve seen him.

I just pray the Wings don’t get suckered into going after Tyson Barrie from the Avs. He has one of the highest minus +/- ratings around.

Las Vegas jump Caesars Palace team will be full of Marchenko’s and Errorson type defense.
The lack of depth on this future team is appalling! DDK has been horrible this season, Kronwall had a very nice career but the tank is about empty, Errorson is terrible, Jensen is a 3rd pairing defenseman maybe at this level and Smith is UFA this summer and hockey IQ I would rate D, to many braindead puck moving decisions but at least he is somewhat physical hitting and fighting wise.
Keep Green, Ouellet, Sproul and Jensen and fire sale the rest and pray Russo and Hicketts are close to making the NHL Wings.

This was just needless and dumb….but it’s what you get with a GM (not G. Malik!) who is seemingly able
to think in about half a dimension.

I’ll always love this team but, really, watching and cheering for the guys still in their mid-twenties and younger,
and seeing what they can do with more opportunity was part of the fun.

So, Marchenko became a below-average defenseman all of a sudden, in half a season?

The Babcock and Holland of a couple of years ago must both be really dense guys.

You do not throw away a mid-twenties D who shoot right and have shown they can play a 20+ min shutdown role, and is one of your cheaper players, too. I’m complaining because it will be catastrophic - I am complaining because needless and dumb has become KH’s specialty of late and I’m getting sick of him managing this team into joyless purgatory.

Now, go ahead: all the people who just said they didn’t like this move, slam me for saying the same a couple of days ago - because I’m being too mean to Kenny; or, because all teams supposedly make the same number of draft mistakes and it doesn’t how many picks and developed prospects we’ve squandered from the limited number we did keep a few years back.

Marchenko didn’t look pretty good this season. Another one who regressed dramatically.

Injury prone too.

Could these be the reason they waived him ?

I’m sure NO ONE considered waiving Big E.

Can’t wait to see who we (might) lose so Ott can get back in the lineup…
