The Malik Report

Sometimes we’ve got to say, “I don’t know where they’re going” (see: Brunner, Cleary)

With Pierre LeBrun and Bob McKenzie heading on vacation, I'm not sure whether we're going to be able to prove that anyone's signed anywhere...

But in all seriousness, at the end of what is turning out to be a seventeen-hour work day, Paul and will do the best we possibly can to inform you of players' destinations over the balance of the summer, never mind the next couple of days.

If we can find an inkling from a reputable source who does not charge you money to have access to insights of player-moving note, we will try to pass those along, be it on Twitter or elsewhere. But if we do not know where a player is going, we are simply going to have to say what has been my most unpopular comment here on KK, TMR, or anywhere else: "I don't know."

As a Red Wings fan as well as a Red Wings blogger, you'd better believe that I want to find out where Damien Brunner's going now that Ken Holland addressed Brunner's status as follows on the Alfredsson conference call, as noted by DetroitRedWings.com's Bill Roose:

"I’m not sure if we’re done with free agency. Obviously, the one guy that’s out there is Dan Cleary, I continue to stay in touch with him. Damien Brunner, I certainly expect he’s going to be moving on to a different situation, but I’ll see what happens with Dan Cleary over the next few hours. But it’s been a tremendous day.”

But I really don't know where Brunner's going to end up. All I know is that every indication going into free agency, from German more than English sources, suggested that Brunner was intrigued by testing the market, and at this point, it appears that Neil Sheehy has directed his client to go to another team.

This was the last we heard of Brunner rumors:

I also know that the Wings' beat writers told us that Daniel Cleary was looking for more term than the Wings were offering, and that at one point, the Peguins were talking to him...

But that fizzled when the Penguins re-signed Craig Adams, and then the Cleary thing got nixed:

So that's what I know about Brunner and Cleary as of 2:45 AM. I cannot make predictions based on that kind of information, and while I understand that it is quite fashionable to throw out some guesses, I would rather be honest and annoy you in saying, "I don't know," like a little kid who has brain damage.

I can't go with, "Source says" or "indications are" or any of that bullshit. The #1 rule of my job is, "DON'T MAKE SHIT UP" and the other one is "CITE YOUR SOURCES."

After that, I can be an *#$%@& and a moron and an immature jerk (okay, the contract doesn't say that explicitly), but you already know I'm an *#$%@& and a moron and an immature jerk.

I at least want to be an honest one.

I'm sorry. I don't know. We will find out, hopefully soon, and while I'm really happy that Daniel Alfredsson, my favorite non-Red Wing--to the point that I have an Alfredsson Senators jersey--joined the team...

I'm really *#$%@& pissed off about Brunner leaving. So I want to *#$%@& know.

"Brain damage" = Quoting Bill Cosby, of course, from Bill Cosby's "Himself." Which is perhaps one of the best comedic pieces in existence.

With that, goodnight.

I have to admit I didn’t know you had to pay to get insights of player movements from “rellable sources”??  Sort of sounds like Informants, Snitches, Rats on CSI.

It really once was a fairly simple sport that was fun to watch. Now with the useless,  needless Lockout that did nothing except muddy the waters for the Sharks (Lawyers, Owners, Players, etc) that only need to smell blood to attack.

I found the 1st day of UFA produced over $400M and over 60 player movements ( an all time record) and the day is really not done until Noon Saturday. So much for the Lockout and new CBA fixing anything. Fans are paying the price even more, IMO

I don’t know where Brunner and/or Cleary will end up and got to the point Friday where I really don’t care.

Over the summer I will have to study the rosters to see where everyone is again with about 10% of players on different teams.

Traverse City will be interesting and I will look forward to George.s analysis and insight on players attending, especially Helm.

All in all Holland and crew did really well filling the top 6 with good players that will fit in well.  Add the draft to that and things look even better for next year and the future.

A new Beast in the East!

That was a dig regarding what Eklund does for a living in promising “inside access” to made-up trade qnd UFA signing rumors.

Please don’t forget Abdelkader in your list, one of the most impactful forwards we had last year.

Feel free to call me crazy.  I’ll believe Brunner is gone when I see the press conference where he signs with ... probably the Blackhawks, just to piss me off.

Until then, I retain hope that he circles back to the Wings and tells Kenny he’d like to come back.  Part of it is his (ahem) enigmatic agent, part of it is just gut.  I’m still hoping he comes back.

I liked Danny but his time in Detroit is over, he needs to move on to a team with lots of space like the Islanders or someone in Florida.  Isn’t that what you do when you get old, retire to Florida?  Danny give Stevey a call and see if you can play with Val.

And George, Eklands a hack, don’t lower yourself and even mention that shitbag.  Opps, I did the same thing!

Okay, this helps explain the vague angst the last week or so,....

“Brain damage” = Quoting Bill Cosby, of course, from Bill Cosby’s “Himself.” Which is perhaps one of the best comedic pieces in existence.

Personally, I think the whole album is wonderful, and I’m partial to the Chocolate Cake monologue and The Dentist monologue from that album/show…..

I at least want to be an honest one.

Between this and your hard work and insight, that’s why you have your following, George.

With that, goodnight.

Good that you haven’t popped up in a while, you’ve got to be well for the trip,....
