Sipple: Red Wings alum Joey Kocur’s charity softball game this weekend involves more than softball

Red Wings alumnus Joey Kocur's charitable foundation will be holding a charity softball game in Highland, MI this Saturday, August 24th, and fourteen Red Wings alums, celebrities like Jeff Daniels, Dave Coulier and Brian Vander Ark will tangle with police officers and firefighters from Milford, Highland and White Lake townships to raise funds for a slate of Southeastern Michigan charities.

The Free Press's George Sipple (via RedWingsFeed) spoke with Kocur about the event, and Kocur's looking forward to the triple-header and the activities accompanying the game itself:

The Joe Kocur Foundation for Children will host its fifth annual Charity Softball Series on Saturday at Duck Lake Pines Park in Highland. Gates open at 10 a.m. with games scheduled at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

“The lineup this year is the best I’ve ever had,” Kocur said. “Dave Coulier just confirmed that he’ll be there. I’m going to have three separate autograph signings. I’ve got Darren McCarty, Chris Osgood and Ted Lindsay signing for an hour. We’ve got two full baseball fields of kids games with a midway and ferris wheel and dunk tanks and rock climbing walls. Everything is donated, so everything that is bought that day goes right back to the charities. My foundation is 100% give back. There is no person on our staff that gets a penny of this.”

Multiple local charities will benefit, including Team Kendal Kidz, Wings of Mercy East Michigan, F.A.R. Conservatory, The Huron Valley Special Olympics and Shannon Gaber Silverthorn Lakeland High School Public Service Scholarship.

Kocur said the event will honor the life of a young Fenton student, Jackson Gangwer, “that tragically passed away in April.”

Among the other former pro hockey players who have confirmed are Petr Klima, Kirk Maltby, Darren Pang, Dino Ciccarelli, Josh Langfeld, Eddie Mio, Mickey Redmond, Paul Ysebaert, John Ogrodnick, Jiri Fischer, Manny Legace, Mike Krushelnyski, Jason Woolley, Dave Lewis, Pat Peake, Bryan Smolinski and Wayne Presley. Other athletes and celebrities confirmed include Dave Rozema (Tigers), Eric Hipple (Lions), Scott Lusader (Tigers), Chris Fehn (Slipknot) and Coulier (“Full House”).

Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Milford, White Lake and Highland police and fire epartments. Tickets can also be purchased at Bakers of Milford, South Lyon Hotel, Comeback Inn of Highland or Glenn Wachler Jewelry on Old Woodward in Birmingham.

Tickets will also be available for $15 at the event. Children under 10 are free, as are autographs

About The Malik Report

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
