Shawn Horcoff confirms he’s been hired as the Wings’ director of player development

The Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson spoke with Shawn Horcoff regarding his new title as the director of player development for the Red Wings:

“It’s a great opportunity for me, especially with my family settled in Detroit and my kids settled in school here,” said Horcoff, who grew up in Trail, B.C., but went to school at Michigan State University, married Cindy from Detroit and has long had a summer place in that area. He also skated with Red Wings players before Oilers training camps for years and has long known [Red Wings GM Ken] Holland.

Horcoff said he was going to retire after this season if he got a contract because there was little left in his tank. He had no interest in training camp tryouts.

The job with the Red Wings entails overseeing their drafted prospects with the American Hockey League farm team in Grand Rapids, Mich., in junior and in Europe. He’ll be running Detroit’s development camp next July and is in Traverse City, Mich., now at the annual tournament with NHL team prospects.

He didn’t want to take a year off to decompress. He’s doing a similar job to another ex-Oilers centre, Todd Marchant in Anaheim. Another former Oilers captain and assistant coach Kelly Buchberger also serves as director of hockey development in Edmonton, overseeing the prospects.

“You know me … I’m not good with doing nothing,” Horcoff said with a laugh. “I need to be doing something, and I always wanted to get into management. I can learn from probably the best organization in the National Hockey League. I did everything I could to get the job when it was presented,” he said. “I think I’m built for this role. I’ve been in the NHL trying to bring young guys along, to teach them to be better pros … I was the type of player who really had to work on his game. Do everything possible with off-ice training and summer training to get the most out of my career,” he said.

Matheson continues...

Yeah, Matheson tweeted that it was Fischer’s job, and Jiri’s taking another position in the organization.  Didn’t say what position for Fischer, though.  I assume we’ll hear that soon.
