Scotty Bowman and Barry Smith to split duties for Red Wings’ Winter Classic Alumni games

WXYZ’s Brad Galli reported on Wednesday afternoon that Scotty Bowman will coach one of the Red Wings’ Winter Classic Alumni Showdown teams, and MLive’s Ansar Khan is confirming...

The Detroit Red Wings are expected to announce soon, perhaps Thursday, that Scotty Bowman will coach in the Winter Classic’s Alumni Showdown at Comerica Park on Dec. 31. M-Live.com reported on July 10 that Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history, had committed to coaching in the game.

Bowman’s longtime assistant, Barry Smith, also will be coaching in the event. The Red Wings announced on July 11 that there will be two alumni games against the Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s uncertain whether Bowman will coach in one and Smith in the other or if the pair will be behind the bench in both games.

As is the Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness, who reports that Bowman will helm one alumni team and Smith will coach the other:

Scotty Bowman will be back behind the bench coaching the Red Wings, even if it’s only for an Alumni game. Bowman will coach one of the Wings’ Alumni teams at this year’s Winter Classic, that pits the Wings against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game will take place Dec. 31.

Barry Smith, one of Bowman’s former assistants, will coach the other Alumni team.

An official announcement is expected to be made Thursday.

Bowman, who coached Detroit from 1993-2002, led the Wings to three Stanley Cups and retired after winning the last one. Smith was an assistant under Bowman in all three Cup winning seasons.

Bowman, who is the NHL’s all-time winningest coach (1,244), currently is the Senior Advisor of Hockey Operations for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Scheduled to be on one of the Wings’ Alumni rosters are Dino Ciccarelli, Joey Kocur, Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Darren McCarty, Chris Chelios, Luc Robitaille, Chris Osgood, Mike Vernon, Gordie Howe, Alex Delveccho and Ted Lindsay.

It will be great to have both behind the bench. I’ll always wonder what really kept barry from getting the big seat somewhere. Scotty obviously though he was good.
