Savage: Red Wings will re-sign Cleary when they get under the 50-man roster limit

The Detroit Free Press's Helene St. James suggested that the Red Wings would probably sign Daniel Cleary to a 3-year deal about an hour ago, and now MLive's Brendan Savage is reporting that a player St. James deemed to be one of Mike Babcock's favorites on Twitter...

Will in fact re-sign with the team once the Wings can find room for him:

Daniel Cleary is going to remain with the Detroit Red Wings. A source told MLive.com today that the veteran forward has agreed to a contract that will pay him roughly $2.6 million per season for three years.

The deal could be announced as early as today but the Red Wings have to release a player to get under the 50-man roster limit before they can re-sign Cleary.

Update: The Macomb Daily's Chuck Pleiness confirms:

A source confirmed that Cleary has agreed on a three-year contract that will pay him roughly $2.6 million a season.

The only sticking point is that the Wings need to release a player to get under the 50-man roster limit in order to re-sign Cleary.

The deal could be announced as early as Saturday.

The Wings, who signed Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss on Friday, currently have 14 forwards under contract and two more restricted free agents – Gustav Nyquist and Joakim Andersson – that will be resigned sometime this summer.

Cleary, who had nine goals and six assists in 48 games during the lockout-shortened season last year, has flourished since he joined the Wings for the 2005-06 season.

SO… about the Wings becoming a younger, bigger team…

Most teams struggle to come up with four NHL-ready lines. But the Wings now have five and two-thirds lines. wink

Pavel - Z - Abby

Alfie - Weiss - Floater

Nike - Helm - Tatar

Miller - Andersson - Eaves
Bert - Sammy - Cleary
Emmerton - Tootoo

If Cleary is coming back, that means three of those guys have to go. It’s a good ol’ fashioned fire sale in Hockeytown.

So I assume that Cleary takes Zetterberg’s spot on the top line?

I love Alfie, so being able to watch him for a full season in a Wings jersey makes me smile, but I do think its hilarious how everyone praised Kenny for going with the youth movement, something he had almost no choice in, and are now praising him for signing several 30+ year olds, sending those youngsters further and further down the lineup (and maybe outta town, depending on roster crunch).

Some people can do no wrong, I guess.

And if there was any truth to the Morrow rumors, I would have liked to see Kenny go after him instead of bringing back Cleary.  He’s a little younger and a little grittier, and has better hands.  But I only saw that rumor once yesterday, so who knows how true it is.

I thought you were in the Bring Cleary Back camp, George.  Now just update that post with Detroit Signs Morrow (or a defensive upgrade) and it will almost make up for the McDonnell/Leach news.

What’s the matter, jkm2011. Did it get so lonely under your bridge you felt the need to stick your little troll head out? Go back where you belong, and leave the real people alone.
