Savage on personnel changes the ‘last time the Wings missed the playoffs’

MLive's Brendan Savage examines some of the personnel moves the Red Wings made the last time they missed the playoffs, in 1990:

The last time the Detroit Red Wings missed the Stanley Cup playoffs, they came back with a roster that featured lots of new faces in 1990-91.

Several were youngsters who were either rookies or in their first full season as NHL regulars.

The youth movement helped trigger a stretch of unprecedented success for the franchise as the Red Wings didn't miss the playoffs again until this season.

General manager Bryan Murray, in his first season with the Red Wings, retooled the 1990-91 roster and brought in no less than nine players who had significant roles in getting the Red Wings back into the postseason.

If current GM Ken Holland can do the same thing with his bloated payroll - and that isn't going to be easy by any stretch - Holland will be an early favorite to be the 2017-18 GM of the Year.

Savage continues, and there's no way in hell that the Wings are going to be able to add 9 players in a salary cap-strapped situation, but they can still make 3 or 4 moves to help bolster the organization's ranks.

I do not expect any changes. It will be same roster, same coaches and KH will say that everybody has to magically improve. But maybe KH will surprise me.

When Murray went about retooling the Red Wings after nine seasons in Washington, he started by getting rid of aging veterans such as Bernie Federko and Borje Salming.

Yes he did.  And he was right.

DET needs retooled again, and it needs to start by exposing basically all the vets in the expansion draft, and by at least convincing Kronwall it’s time to retire.

Of course we all know this won’t happen.  And Ken Holland’s legacy will be as the one that destroyed the Wings, rather than as a winner.

Cheveldae, who never panned out the way the Red Wings hoped,

I never got this.  Cheveldae wasn’t Roy or Hasek or something, but I remember him as a legit starting goalie that racked up a lot of wins for the team and made an All- Star appearance.  I kinda’ remember him as being fine and more a scapegoat for the rest of the roster being flawed come playoff time.  Because it says a lot that even after he left, DET still had big playoff problems.

Fans in 2017- We’ll never win a stanley cup with this incompetent owner, front office staff and coach.
Fans in 2002- Yzerman’s finished he deserves to be boed for getting injured in the Olympics and hurting his team we’ll never win a another cup again.
1997- Chris Osgood sucks and we’ll never win a cup with this clown in net.
1996- What a horrible trade, Coffey and Primeau they are running this franchise into the ground.
1996- why is Scotty Bowman is still the coach,  all this talent and they can’t win fire him now.
1994- Steve Yzerman is a bum and he’s a horrible leader and will never lead this team to a stanley cup.

These are 100% unsarcastic real remarks made by fans in the past, don’t they sound oh so familar?
Fans are wrong the vast majority of the time that’s why GM’s don’t listen to fans.

However, let’s just say that Holland’s next year is his last, who,  and acullay come up with some names, do you want to replace Holland? If you say Steve Yzerman, that’s a completely unrealstic suggestion.

I really do understand the frustration, especially being a 30 something and enjoying success for a majority of my life, but whatever happened to sticking with your team, I mean some of the fans frustrations come from impossibly unrealistic expectations.

Their is too much dead weight and bad contracts to get rid of in one offseason. The league simply doesn’t work like it did in 1991. At best they can try to force a bad contract on Vegas, unloading one. Perhaps a buyout could be used on another. Maybe they find another home for Howard. Making the correct steps is better than making none or bringing in more crap.

The Wings cannot force Kronwall to retire nor should they. His retiring would just make the cap issues worse. Getting him on LTIR for the rest of his career is ideal but they can’t hide a “healthy” player there.

Whatever you’re on, please send some up my way. There is no law enforcement presence on the Mackinac Bridge, it will be safe.

Evileye, careful sir, nobody wants to hear the reality of leagues rigid payroll and roster structure system limiting trades and player dumps, and just general common sense. Keep it simple, Holland sucks, its the answer to every question that ends in wings.

Holland just needs to go Gillooly Kronner’s good knee, kidnap a rival GMs daughter and force a 1st round trade for Ericson, sprinkle helm in cacaine and hookers before the Vegas expansion draft, and buy a #1 Dman from the guy who sold Jack his magic beanstalk beans.  That’s what a real GM would, but he won’t cause sucks !

Great comeback-

Yes, actually they are just because you refuse to believe it doesn’t mean it’s not true.
Bowman was actually booed in 96 the year after they lost to new Jersey. Everything else I stated was also completely accurate.

Source, cite, and show your work then.

It’s one thing to write in generalities, it’s another thing to give specific lists of statements and claims and just blanket claim they’re true.

Cite your claims.  Show your work.

Otherwise you’re just placing words into other peoples’ mouths because it fits your argument, and you have very little credibility.

Steve Yzerman should stay in Utah after what he pulled. Yzerman’s knee flared up during the Olympics and now he’s going to sit at home on his butt and miss games for the team and fans who pay him his $8 million per year. What an Outrage! Mario Lemieux is being lynched in Pittsburgh and it should be the same in Detroit for Yzerman.

Why would I make that stuff up?
