Ryan Sproul May Be “The Odd Man Out” On The Wings’ Defense

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

There’s time to sort things out, and given the nature of training camp and the exhibition games, injuries are bound to happen.

But as the Red Wings prepare to open training camp Friday, there appear to be one too many defensemen.

General manager Ken Holland said this summer the plan is to carry seven — which could leave a young defenseman like Ryan Sproul in danger of not making the roster.

With Trevor Daley, Danny DeKeyser, Jonathan Ericsson, Mike Green, Nick Jensen, Niklas Kronwall and Xavier Ouellet seemingly secure of spots, Sproul could be the odd man out.

——-his indecisiveness at times caused him problems at both ends of the ice.
——No wonder when you are benched for every mistake while E can do whatever he wants and stay in the lineup.

Doesn’t matter - he’ll be in the lineup by the 5th game.  It shouldn’t take long for one of our regulars to be injured, if no during preseason.

Sproul produced more on the PP than Kronwall and Dekeyser, despite playing dramatically fewer minutes. Many times, Sproul was sitting beside AA on the bench watching our useless PP being manned by veterans who had more stock and eat more cheese or whatever moronic catchphrases have been used to justify the inept leadership of this organization.

Is sproul really that good though?  lol. Kenny is going to waive him, we’ll cry about talent mismanagement, and sproul will be another Kindl.

Prefer him to be on the roster instead of a player not earning their inflated salary, but its not the Ken Holland Way.

Is he better than E and Kronwall?  By a mile.  Imagine if he got to play and learn.

Might not like it but players need reps to get the timing of the pro game.

This isn’t 2002. It’s not just about who is better. It’s about the cap. It’s about getting good value.

Like Ericsson is probably better than Sproul right now…but not enough to justify an extra $3.5M of cap space.

Maybe Glendening is better than Nosek (debatable)...but not enough to justify the extra $1.2M.

Some people loved Miller at $1.1M…but couldn’t Bertuzzi do that for $500,000 less? Slightly different players but that’s more cap space.

Nyquist is better than PA Parenteau…but is he $4M better? Too late now. Can’t trade him.

We had Kyle Quincey making $4.25M on this roster while Ouellet and Jensen were sitting in the AHL.

When you start to add this up then you realize the kind of superstar talent that could be added to the roster if you just made smarter decisions. This is how Pittsburgh magically finds a way to add a Phil Kessel while we add David Legwand. You have to get good value.

A very good possibility. Both Kronwall and/or Big E could be preseason casualties. oh oh

Even Vegas didn’t want Sproul. He shouldn’t even be considered a #7 on this team. Holland should have picked Ondrej Palat or Johnny Gaudreau for Pete’s sake. Holland is a chump for missing on those two guys and taking Sproul. Blashill is shellacking him almost daily.

May Be ??  Could Be ??
When you’re coming off of knee surgery and expected to start the season on IR then yeah ... Dick fuchin’ Tracey there Kulfan.  He’ll end up playing a few rehab games in GR and then the fun starts.  We’ll all get back to bitching about Ericsson ... something I’ve been doing for ... ohhhhhh ... 6 or 7 years now. The other thing I’ll be raving about all season is trading Mike Green waaaay before the trade deadline.

Maybe they wanted Nosek more, not sure that’s really a knock on Sproul.

Has it been confirmed that Sproul is 100% healthy?  Most of the summer word was that he’d be starting the year on IR.

And here we all expected that they would take someone who just had surgery and would be questionable to be healthy enough to start the last year of his contract.

Right?

I get that Sproul put points up but his play in his own zone was horrendous so I understand him being the odd man out. Maybe since we’ll be short a forward, converting him would be the better way to go? You know because his offensive instincts.

I get that he’s probably, may be a better option than Ericsson on D but we all know he’s not taking E out of the lineup. Only injuries will successfully accomplish that.

Anyone remember how Mantha floated and looked lost at times his first season? That’s Sproul at pretty much all times other than when he’s on the point on the PP.

he doesn’t have to play a 200 ft game by any means but he’s also kinda gotta learn how to play defense.

How dare you say that a defenseman should learn to play defense. Don’t you know that’s how the Red Wings ruined Brendan Smith!?!?

You just watch a mechanic fix a car for a few years and expect to do the same stuff yourself and never make a mistake.

Youve got to be out there with him.  Now is the time you evaluate your ceilings and fits of players and put them in a poaition to succeed.

Mike Green was worth 6m and his D is about that of E (king of looking lost in his own zone and 0 offense to go along with a 4m cap hit) but Sproul cant get a whiff on a lower pairing to learn the game having all the same attributes Green had even if less polished.  Green also got a chance to learn the NHL game and not be expected to be Lidstrom when we put you in in the odd game.

Asset management 101.

To be clear the REAL reason we havent given Sproul a real shoy is contracts.

Thats Hollands best bet at keeping his job is making his contracts look justified and if he makes the playoffs ownerships pacified.  Only scenerio where all this makes sense.

Whoever mentioned Washingtons roster situation to our own, think it was VP, was dead on.

If Kenny wouldnt have made the right friends hed be selling cars.

its not real, its a tired incorrect excuse by HHHT fanboys who love stats and next guys, not these guys.

Was it contracts that cause Sproul to be passed over by young players like Dekeyser, Outlette, Marchenko, and Jensen.  Sproul has played, he’s gotten into games, he didn’t take his piece of the cheese, had he not blown his knee out, he would’ve gotten a better look last year.  Other young players got there chance, showed , they showed they belonged, and they stayed.

If we’re using that tired untrue argument, I guess I would’ve been given a real shot in my playing days, if the NHL AHL, ECHL, OHL and others didn’t have all these BETTER players under contract and team control. Screw those GMS!
