Report- The Wings Have Interest In Tony Granato As An Assistant Coach

from Chuck Pleiness at the Oakland Press,

According to Wings general manager Ken Holland, Tom Renney is in the final stages of landing a position with Hockey Canada.

Renney spent two years as a coach with Hockey Canada, serving as the head coach of the Canadian National Team that went on to capture a silver medal at the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway.

“Mike (Babcock) has been talking to a number of people,” Holland said during a phone interview.

Renney is up for the vacant position as president and chief executive officer, which was formerly held by Bob Nicholson.

One of the candidates the Wings have interest in is also interviewing with a few others teams before making his decision.

According to a source, one person Detroit has interviewed is Tony Granato.

I’m sorry however this is a disaster in the making.  When Granato was the head coach of the Dives he had an abundance of talent and instead of using that talent instead drove them into foolish douchebaggery and thuggishness.

But he’ll be an Assistant, not a head coach if hired in Detroit.  Babcock won’t stand for douchebaggery on his team.

But yeah, I agree with you that OMG, Granato.  Really?  What next, Byslma as an Associate?

If Byslma is behind the bench in Detroit, EP’s gonna be rofl-ing like a loon.

Can he quarterback the PP?  Does he shoot right?

This could be even more awkward if the Wings hire him, and then they part ways with Landon Ferraro, whose father, Ray, married Cammi Granato.

No more awkward than your connect the dots explanation of why it would even matter.

What does that make Tony anyway? Landon’s uncle in law?

Does Babcock really need assistants, does he ever listen to them. I know he says he wants people to come up with new ideas and challenge him, but looking at our PP since Lids retired, I am thinking Babcock kills any ideas he is presented anyway and does it his way.
The only reason to hire an assistant is to serve as a buffer zone between Babcock and the players (especially young ones).
Now, for the record, I like Babcock in general. I think he is a great motivator at times, does not look for excuses and probably can get a team full of Glendenings to the playoffs.
I do not think he is good for young skilled players as he wants to make all of them to be 4th line grinders (imo, of course).
And some of Babcock’s decisions last year were mind boggling. I do not understand how you need 75 games (between 2 seasons) to realize that Smith and Q cannot play together. The fact that Franzen and Dats have zero chemistry together is still not understood by Babs. I also do not understand how you can be so stubborn with your PP approach that has not been working since Lids left and I could not understand how do you split the line that (along with Nyquist heroics) basically brought you to the playoffs. I am talking about Jurco/Sheahan/Tatar line. Those guys complimented each other to perfection, so Babcock decided to put Nyquist there instead of Jurco. And he literally killed 2 birds at the same time, Nyquist stopped scoring and the line was not great at all against Boston.
And then, of course, playing one of the smartest passers and shooters on our team (Alfy) with Helm and Glendening.
Dats/Cleary/Bert was a “nice” line too, of course. I think compared to these moves, putting Abby with Dats and Z is not even the worst he came up with.

I’m not sure you can look at the roster, particularly on D, and blame all the PP woes on Babcock.

In fact, since supposedly it’s been one of the assistants who works the PP, I’m not sure any of the PP woes can be blamed on Babcock.

Forward on the point is all Babcock imo although it never really worked. The idea that the ONLY way to score on a PP is a shot from the point with traffic upfront is Babcock also (does not work as the only option since Lids and Holm retired). Not giving possibly the most offensively gifted dman we have a chance on a PP is also Babcock imo (btw Smith spent 2 shifts on a PP and scored 1 goal).

Smith and Quincey, lol….that pairing produced some epic pratfalls last season, eh?

A virtual high-wire act.

If Quincey can take his raise as a bribe/order to mostly stay at home and play the body (not intended to sound dirty) he and DeKeyser could work ok.

I wish Kindl and Babcock weren’t such a vexed combination. Lots of frustrating flaws in Kindl’s game, but has the skills to help on the power play. Wonder if he hangs around long enough (or has a shred of confidence left) to get another chance with Blashill (no, not in Grand Rapids). Admittedly, the guy’s (half-)chance in Detroit has probably come and gone.

You know who else can help on the power play? Daniel Cleary. That’s one of the reason’s they re-signed him.

OK, sorry, couldn’t resist.

And Cleary will play on a PP. I mean who do we have as a net front presence? Really nobody (another area where KH did nothing to improve the team). It will be some combination of Abby, Cleary and Sheahan.
Only Sheahan is OK and I would try Ericsson maybe. Not sure about his hand eye coordination and ability to retrieve pucks, but at least he is big.
