Red Wings release summer development camp roster

Updated 2x with some roster clarification at 1:07 AM: No Calle Jarnkrok, no Alexei Marchenko, no Jake Chelios, no Mattias Backman: Just over a week-and-a-half before the Red Wings’ summer prospect camp kicks of on July 7th in Traverse City, MI, the Wings have released their list of players attending the camp. DetroitRedWings.com’s Bill Roose reports that the team has invited 28 players and 14 free agents to the camp, and some of their free agent invitees’ names might sound familiar:

Of the invitees, three have ties to the Wings’ organization, including Dean and Jake Chelios, the sons of longtime defenseman and current advisor to hockey operations, Chris Chelios. The son of coach Mike Babcock, Detroit Catholic Central senior Michael Babcock, will be a first-time participant in the camp.

Here’s the Wings’ list of players attending the camp. Free agent try-outs are listed in italics:

Update: via RedWingsFeed, the Left Wing Lock’s Sarah Lindenau offers a full roster—and she says that Jake Chelios is attending the Hawks’ camp, with and that Alexei Marchenko and Calle Jarnkrok are unable to attend—and profiles of the free agent try-outs:

• Michael Babcock, Jr. - The 5-foot-9, 150 pound forward is the son of the Red Wings head coach. The speedy forward was the 68th overall pick of the Cedar Rapid Rough Riders of the USHL but spent last season playing for Detroit Catholic high school where he as named to the 2012 All-State team. Similar to when Jim Nill’s Son (Trevor) skated with Detroit at their annual development camp a few years ago, the 17 year-old Babcock is participating for the experience.

• Julien Cayer -  A 6-foot-3, 193 pound center who was Detroit’s fourth choice in the 2008 NHL entry draft. Cayer played the last four seasons with Clarkson University where he never scored more than 10 points in a season. The big forward is a good skater who plays a physical game, but hasn’t done enough in four seasons to earn a contract. This is likely his last chance with Detroit.

• Dean Chelios – The 6-foot-2, 185 pound forward is entering his final season at Michigan State University. Chelios is a physical forward who hasn’t been able to crack the 15 point mark at the college level. He’s participated in the Wings development camp the past few years along with his brother, Jake. With Jake attending the Chicago Black Hawks camp this year, Dean will be the sole Chelios participating in Traverse City.

• Luke Glendening – A 5-foot-10, 185 pound forward has played the last four seasons for the University of Michigan. Glendening was named the CCHA best defensive forward last season after scoring 10 goals and 21 points in 41 games. Nothing has come easy for the former Michigan captain after walking on the team in 2008. He signed an amateur tryout contract with the Providence Bruins of the AHL last season appearing in 3 games, and recently inked a one year deal with Grand Rapids for the 2012-2013 season.

I’d quote more of her article, but please head over to the Left Wing Lock for the rest as she worked very hard on figuring out who these guys are.

Update #2: According to Hockeysverige’s Uffe Bodin, Mattias Backman won’t attend as he’s just had surgery on his nose.

No. I just spoke to Sarah on Twitter (@Lindy72) and she says that Jarnkrok and Marchenko were very late subtractions.

DeKeyser is not attending this year?  Will he be attending another NHL team’s summer development camp roster?  Does his absence mean the Wings are no longer frontrunners for his future services?  Or am I reading too much into things?

Dekeyser may be going somewhere else and he may be attending class or something…I’ll ask Sarah to look into it.

Am I the only one recognizing Parker Milner on here?! He was an absolute beast at Boston College. Excited to see him get an invite.

I’d be willing to bet Brenden wants to go himself to get his legs going for preseason and try to climb the ladder some to start the season.  Probably help getting his offense going.  Looks good as a leader to go and help mentor the new guys.

That’s exactly what I was figuring. He’ll be there to set the example for everyone else.

I don’t get that:  they keep changing their school name over the years.  First, it was “Redford CC.”  Then it became “Detroit Redford CC.”  Now, it’s just “Detroit CC.”

Well, Yzerman was drafted at 5’8” 150lb and grew into a 5’11” 185lb frame when he became the Captain at 21.  Just a kid.

Are you going to make this one, George?

Would love to hear about Athanasiou. As well as this 6’6” Swede Bodin

Catholic Central moved their campus from Redford to Novi a few years back, which is why they dropped the “Redford”.
