Red Wings’ Niklas Kronwall named ‘second star of the week’

Very cool: the NHL named its “Three Stars of the Week” a few minutes ago, and Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall was named the #2 star behind Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, who’s salvaging the Sabres’ pride, and ahead of Chicago Blackhawks goalie Ray Emery, who’s salvaging the Blackhawks’ playoff hopes:

The Detroit Red Wings don’t have to worry as much about the playoffs, and part of that credit goes to defenseman Niklas Kronwall, who stepped up in the absence of fellow blueliners Nicklas Lidstrom and Jonathan Ericsson to put up 2 goals and 5 assists in three games last week to earn Second Star of the Week.

On Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets, he scored the game-tying goal in the second period and set up Henrik Zetterberg’s go-ahead goal in a 5-2 victory. Then he set up three of the Wings’ first four goals in a 6-0 defeat of the Minnesota Wild on Friday. He capped his week with the Wings’ lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Many thanks to Yahoo Sports’ Sean Leahy for the heads-up.

I was wondering..When Nick retires (dear god..hopefully not now), I would name Pavel as our next captain. If he is too shy or uncomfortable with the language, I would pick Kronwall. I know I am going to get crucified by saying this by not picking Z. He is a great player, but too many times made statements to the media that differed somewhat from what the coach said. I am not saying that he is a bad teammate and he can sure deliver in the playoffs…..but there can only be one…...

I would like to know what other people think here (I think the question was asked in another post) . Who would be your candidate and who would be your two assistants?

Thanks everyone
Go Wings!

It appears that Zata is the wearing the “C” de facto when TPH hangs up the skates (and I hope not for the next 10 years).  He may disagree with Uncle Mike on some things (“playoff switch”) but I don’t take them for adversaries in the dressing room when they both want the same thing for the team.

I do NOT mean this is a stereotype but I find that some Russians with the “C” on their shoulder seem to falter wearing it.  The only Russian I know of that could carry it with any kind of authority and help make his team better is Slava Fetisov and we know the stories of his courage.  Having said that, I’d rather that Dangles have the first and permanent “A” instead.

The third “A” is the tough one:  Helm, Kronner, Darth Kader, or maybe even Smitty.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wings rotated it.

I feel like we aren’t giving Babcock, Lidstrom, Z and Babcock’s sport psychology background enough credit here.  Almost invariably, when Babcock comes down harshly on the team, Lidstrom offers a slightly softer version (“we’ve just got to work harder” as opposed to babcock’s “our effort is terrible”) and Z offers a borderline contrary view (“we are a veteran team that knows what to do, when the playoff gets here we will flip the switch”) but he doesn’t typically directly disagree with Babcock and Lidstrom; rather, he takes the slightly softer (Lidstrom) view a step further.  Most teams have an assistant coach who is the good or bad cop, with the head coach being the other.  The wings are a veteran-star player led team and have been since Yzerman’s coming of age in a way that most teams are not.  Does it not seem at least as possible that Z is in on it WITH Babcock and Lidstrom rather than tuning them out and/or ignoring what they have to say?

Given what his stats have done, with little drop off in his defensive play, and given his obvious acceptance of his role as the #2 center when five years ago he was in the consideration for “best player in the league” discussions…  Why do we think its a given that he is not buying in?

Good for Kronner!  Well deserved recognition.  And I couldn’t care less right now who the next Captain is.  Let’s win Cup #12 with our current Captain first, shall we?
