Red Wings kind-of-sort-of sign Riley Sheahan

MLive’s Ansar Khan reports that Red Wings prospect and University of Notre Dame forward Riley Sheahan has exhausted his college eligibility by committing the following deed:

Riley Sheahan, the Wings’ top pick (21st overall in 2010), has signed an amateur tryout contract with Grand Rapids, will join Griffins.

Unless this is an unpaid amateur tryout contract—does that even exist?—I take it this means Sheahan is not returning to college for his senior year?  If that is the case, I take it that the amateur tryout is to avoid wasting the first year of his entry level contract for the last few weeks of the Griffins regular season.

ATOs are unpaid, but they still cause you to lose your NCAA eligibility because the professional team is providing transportation, equipment, etc.

About The Malik Report

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
