Red Wings engage in different sort of visit with Brendan Shanahan

MLive’s Ansar Khan reports that the Red Wings visited with one Brendan Shanahan, former teammate of about a third of the Wings, to talk about something that doesn’t involve reminiscing old times:

The Detroit Red Wings are probably the last team Brendan Shanahan has to concern himself with when it comes to disciplinary matters, since they usually have the fewest fighting majors and are among the league’s least-penalized teams every year.

But Shanahan, the NHL’s first-year vice president of player safety, spoke with the Red Wings Wednesday night at their hotel in Nashville. He is making the rounds to all 30 teams, discussing in detail what separates a legal hit from an illegal one. He is showing video and answering questions.

“Just going over what he’s seen so far in the first quarter of the season, showed some of the illegal hits and some of the legal hits,’’ Red Wings captain and former Shanahan teammate Nicklas Lidstrom said. “Just letting us know what (the NHL) is looking at when there’s a questionable hit. It helps the players having a chance to see how (the league) is looking at things and what we can do to prevent some of those hits.’‘

Shanahan has doled out 22 suspensions since the preseason, including one to a Red Wing – defenseman Brendan Smith received five games for a head shot on Chicago’s Ben Smith in a preseason game.
