The Malik Report

Red Wings-Blackhawks live blog: Is it about message sending? Yeah, from Detroit, to Detroit

Amidst near-calculus level equations and talk of Chris Osgood’s desire to continue playing, hype, Henrik Zetterberg panic-mongering and Mike Modano reiterating his wavering toward retiring, at least if the Wings go on a long playoff run, the Detroit Red Wings face off against the Chicago Blackhawks shortly (7:30 PM, FSD/CSN Chicago/Versus) knowing that they can either eliminate a potential playoff opponent or give the defending Stanley Cup champs all sorts of momentum while definitively losing home-ice advantage for the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Given the Wings’ very mediocre record since, um, January, the Red Wings can’t catch themselves worrying too much about their opponents or the implications of wins or losses for anyone but themselves as a team that still can’t shake the injury bug plays in its final two dress rehearsals before the playoffs begin.

Forget the hype, forget the pundits’ pre-playoff panic-mongering and make the Hawks’ playoff hopes a memory, Wings. That’s your job tonight and on Sunday.

If the Mule wants to get out of my own personal doghouse, he better get a natural hat-trick, right god damn now.

There’s been a lot of conjecture the past few days about which western conference team would be the most favorable matchup.

From the perspective of fans of the other teams in the west though, I think the one team that everyone has to be licking their chops over playing right now would be the one in red and white.  When was the last time we could say that?

You know what’s almost as bad as they pathetic efforts the Wings have put forth way too often this season? The BS we hear after the game. The same old drivel about more attention to detail, working hard, blah, blah, blah. If I have to listen to one more indifferent Zetterberg interview after an embarrassing loss I think I will be sick. Kenny Holland will be put to the test this summer, some big changes need to be made….

This is the first Wings team of the last twenty seasons where I have no faith that they can make it past the first round.

And that sucks because I love me my Red Wings.

Funny how the perspective of a non-sports-fan can differ from ours.  My husband keeps saying: “They’re in the playoffs.  Why should they care about this game?”

I hate to think about this because there is so much fuching talent on the team.  But it simply isn’t working.

I don’t honestly think this team has that extra gear left in them - if they can’t be bothered to turn it on at all in the last month of the season, how can they expect to turn it on during the playoffs? I desperately want to be proven wrong, but I don’t see any signs of life from this team.

About The Malik Report

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
