Red Wings Wednesday practice post: Datsyuk & Helm out THU (and FRI?); everybody waitin’ on deadline

Updated 2x at 2:31 PM: The Red Wings were tardy in terms of filing onto the ice for today's practice...

At 12:10 PM, however, per Pleiness, I guess we received as to why the Wings recalled Cory Emmerton after Darren Helm suffered an "upper-body injury" in last night's loss to New Jersey:

Datsyuk not on ice for practice. Don't know what that means for his status Thursday against Colorado. #RedWings

...

Helm also not on ice. He left game after second period with upper body injury. Alfredsson missing. At dental appt. Cleary still not skating.

And MLive's Ansar Khan...

Wings filing onto the ice for practice. Datsyuk and Helm are not skating.

The Detroit News's Ted Kulfan also confirmed:

No Datsyuk or Helm on the ice for practice

Pleiness tossed in an, "Oh yeah, by the way" that isn't surprising:

Forgot about Weiss also missing from practice.

Pardon the roll call, but it appears that the Free Press's Carlos Monarrez is covering practice, with Helene St. James likely covering the 3:30 PM Lidstrom presser:

Darren Helm not practicing today at JLA.

And yes, the Wings' Twitter folks are in attendance, too:

Practice just started at The Joe; no Pav, Helm, or Alfie #RedWings

Kulfan filed a 12:30 no-news-is-no-news update...

General manager Ken Holland is looking for a defenseman, but likely only will trade if there’s a player available who can be a Red Wing for multiple seasons.

Buffalo’s Christian Ehroff and Vancouver’s Alex Edler have been prominently mentioned in recent days as possible targets.

The Red Wings did make one personnel move Wednesday, however. They recalled center Cory Emmerton from Grand Rapids, after the injury to Darren Helm (upper body) on Tuesday night. The extent of Helm’s injury isn’t yet known.

This is real news, from DetroitRedWings.com's Bill Roose...

Just spoke to Henrik Zetterberg, who visited #RedWings teammates this morning here at JLA. Still feeling some residual pain from surgery.

Yes, this is cool:

This is...different.

So we're all waiting...

And you may take this from MLive's Eric Lacy for what you will:

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, a non-profit organization that's revitalized 5.5 miles of city waterway, could play a role in the future of Joe Louis Arena once the Detroit Red Wings move to a new home.

William Smith, the organization's CFO, told MLive.com on Wednesday it hasn't ruled out any options now that Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch has city approval for a new $650 million arena and entertainment district north of The Joe.

"That would be an enormous jump of what our purpose and mission is right now," said Smith, when asked if the organization would be interested in buying the city-owned Joe for redevelopment. "But, you know, anything is possible, anything is possible."

Smith claimed he's unaware of any Joe Louis Arena redevelopment proposals presented to the city. A timeline for construction of a new arena and district on Woodward, north of Interstate 75 hasn't been made public.

Any plan to buy Joe Louis Arena from the city and incorporate it into the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy's plans for the riverfront would likely be a huge undertaking for the organization

No surprise here, from the aforementioned Free Press's Helene St. James:

No Pavel Datsyuk or Darren Helm for #RedWings vs Colorado. Safe to say out against Devils on Friday, too. No more details yet.

Update #0.5:

Kulfan confirmation!

No Datsyuk or Helm for tomorrow vs.  Avalanche

More from Khan...

Babcock said Helm is out tomorrow, he's getting checked out today. Datsyuk still out. Alfredsson will be ready to play.

And Pleiness...

Babcock said no injured guys will be back Thursday. So no Datsyuk. Helm. Weiss. Cleary. Alfredsson will play.

Monarrez...

Babcock says he's not in "a hurry" to trade young assets who can be part of future championships. Expects Alfredsson (sans teeth) to play.

And Galli...

Babcock said to get in consistent Cup-winning position, you have to build. Once you "get to a point," then you make moves. "We're not there"

And now the Detroit News's John Niyo:

Babcock on Wings' view at trade deadline. "When you get to a certain point, then you move assets. We're not at that point."

Update #1: Yes Ken Holland was on TSN and said that the Wings have to figure out whether Datsyuk/Helm/Weiss's injuries will affect the team's decision-making regarding making a forward rental, and he also said this:

Update #1.05: From Galli:

Jimmy Howard on playing the Joe for the first time since before the Olympics: "We gotta make this a tough place to play again." #RedWings

Update #2: From the Free Press's Carlos Monarrez:

The Detroit Red Wings won't have center Darren Helm for Thursday's game against the Colorado Avalanche (8 p.m., FSD, NHL Network).

Coach Mike Babcock offered no update on Helm's mysterious absence. Helm did not play after the second period of Tuesday's loss at New Jersey because of an upper-body injury.

"He's not available tomorrow," Babcock said after today's practice at Joe Louis Arena. "He's getting checked out today."

Forward Pavel Datsyuk (knee) did not practice and also will not be available. With their number of healthy centers dwindling, the Wings recalled Cory Emmerton from Grand Rapids.

Forward Daniel Alfredsson did not practice after he had some teeth knocked out during Wednesday's game, but Babcock expects him to play against Colorado.

"He's missing lots of teeth, but he was here," Babcock said. "So I think he'll go."

Cleary still not skating.

So it’s not ALL bad news.

Darren Helm has been invisible since his first stint this year when he was scoring.

With Sheahan, Andersson and Glendening showing NHL abilities, is it time to see what he’s worth?

I’m pretty much at the point where I’m done with Darren Helm.

Understandable, but no trade so far has involved a prospect of that level, and only one or 2 have involved 1st rounders.  Rentals are out of the question, but if a player, like Ehrhoff, who can remain with your team for year to come and make a positive impact, is availaible, Holland needs to get a deal done.

Free agency has just been way too big a crap shoot lately with everyone locking down good players to long term contracts, especially reliable D.

Why are rentals out of the question when you can get the likes of Marian Gaborik for a nonfactor roster spot, a 2nd round pick and a conditional 3rd?

Prices have dropped significantly as teams get desperate to unload in the final hours.

This is sometimes referred to as “managing the team”.

I dont think that they are in a position in the standings to bet on rentals.  And the fact that Holland himself has said no rentals.

I will admit I hadn’t seen what Gaborik went for, I just saw the deal was done.

Managing your team, eh?  I must admit, I’m intrigued by this concept.  Do you think Holland has heard of this “managing”?

KH is a complete and utter mystery to me.
- Is he the guy who wants caviar buy only wants to pay for peanut butter?
- Is he the guy who used to rely on unfettered pre-cap cash and never had to worry about failed acquisitions, and now doesn’t trust himself to acquire talent on a budget?
- Is he the man who hid behind the curtain of Nill and Illich?

Well, as he says so often, once you make the playoffs anything can happen, so what better time to bet on rentals when you’re right on the playoff bubble?  If a rental helps you get to the playoffs, isn’t he worth it?
