From the Red Wings' PR department:

RED WINGS SUPPORT TROOPS THIS THURSDAY ON MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT PRESENTED BY APPLEBEE’S

… Team Hosts Military Members, Holds Care Package Collection on Feb. 21 …

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings will host their annual Military Appreciation Night presented by Applebee’s this Thursday, Feb. 21, when the team takes on the Columbus Blue Jackets at 7:30 p.m. (FOX Sports Detroit and 97.1 The Ticket).

“We are excited to be a part of Military Appreciation Night with the Red Wings,” said Mark Schostak, owner of 65 Michigan Applebee’s locations, “and we are proud to continue to honor servicemen and servicewomen year-round with Military Monday, when veterans and active duty military will receive 30 percent discount on their food purchases all day every Monday at Applebee’s.”

Volunteers from Blue Star Mothers of America Chapter 180 will be on hand to collect care package items and monetary donations at each entrance of Joe Louis Arena when the doors open at 6:00 p.m. For each item or cash donation to Blue Star Mothers of America, fans will be entered to win a 2011-12 team autographed goalie stick.

Blue Star Mothers of America will include all items collected on Thursday when they pack the care package boxes the following week and ship them to soldiers currently serving overseas. All monetary donations from Thursday’s game will help cover the cost of shipping care packages.

Suggested care package items include:

  •     Wet wipes (cleaning wipes like Clorox and individual hand wipes like Wet Ones)
  •     Hygiene items: travel size shampoo and conditioner, bar soap, deodorant, razors, shaving cream (not in an aerosol can), toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.
  •     Socks and t-shirts (must be dark brown or khaki)
  •     DVDs
  •     Laundry detergent and fabric softeners (unscented)
  •     Chapstick and sunscreen
  •     Gum
  •     Powdered drink mixes and individual packets
  •     Magazines, books and CDs
  •     Playing cards
  •     Disposable cameras
  •     Hard candy

Merchandise Fire Sale

Fans attending Thursday’s game will have the unique opportunity to purchase autographed items from current and former Red Wings players at a team fire sale behind Section 126 on the concourse. Items range from hockey sticks autographed by Nicklas Lidstrom and Chris Osgood to an autographed Mike Modano jersey to signed pucks and photos of former players. All of the proceeds raised from the fire sale will benefit the Operation USO Care Package program. For every $25 brought in by the fire sale, USO will send a care package to a soldier currently serving overseas.

“Support Our Troops” Banner

Fans are also encouraged to sign an eight-foot-wide banner behind Section 112 on the concourse Thursday night. The banner has already been signed by the entire 2012-2013 team and reads “The Detroit Red Wings Support Our Troops.” The Wings will send the team-signed and fan-signed banner to a Michigan-based military unit currently serving overseas.

Wings Honor Military at Game

Military members in attendance will be honored during the game, including guests in the Quicken Loans Budd Lynch Veterans Suite. Earlier in the day, 50 military members in addition to their guests will attend the Red Wings morning skate at 10:30 a.m. and will enjoy lunch provided by Applebee’s.
