Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings and captain Henrik Zetterberg encourage fans coming down to this weekend’s afternoon home games on Saturday, Feb. 9, and Sunday, Feb. 10, to support the team’s 11th annual Smoke Detector Collection presented by Comerica.
Fans who donate either a smoke detector with batteries or make a monetary donation at Joe Louis Arena will be entered to win an autographed Zetterberg puck and photo. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Representatives from local fire departments, including Detroit FD and Southfield FD, along with volunteers from Comerica Cares will be on hand to collect smoke detectors and monetary donations, which will be used to purchase additional smoke detectors. This year’s in-game smoke detector collection is in addition to the Face Off Against Fire smoke detector collection held at southeastern Michigan Comerica banking centers.
In his seventh season as the team spokesman for this initiative, Zetterberg will personally match the donations made by fans toward the collection up to $15,000. He will distribute smoke detectors from this year’s collection on Monday, Mar. 4, following practice to representatives from local fire departments. The fire departments will then, in turn, donate and install the fire alarms to elderly, disabled and low-income residents throughout Metro Detroit, who could otherwise not afford one.
The annual Smoke Detector Collection began in 2001 in memory of former Red Wings player Brendan Shanahan’s father, who was a firefighter. Since the program’s inception, the Red Wings have distributed more than 19,500 smoke detectors to local fire departments and agencies, including 5,065 smoke detectors last season.

About The Malik Report
The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
