Red Wings sign Luke Glendening; Chad Billins exits for Calgary

It's not a big signing given the magnitude of what's happened today, but it's great for the Red Wings and great for someone who was a walk-on with the University of Michigan and a try-out who earned an AHL-only contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins:

RED WINGS SIGN FORWARD LUKE GLENDENING TO A ONE-YEAR DEAL

... Grand Rapids Native Helped Lead Griffins to the 2013 Calder Cup Championship …

Detroit, MI... Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the club has signed forward Luke Glendening to a one-year contract.  In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

Glendening, 24, was signed by the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League as a free agent on June 19, 2012, and split time last season between Grand Rapids (51GP, 8G-18A-26P) and the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL (27GP, 14G-7A-21P).  The 5-11, 200-lb. forward skated in 24 postseason games for the Griffins during their run to the 2013 Calder Cup championship, collecting 16 points (6G-10A-16P) and 30 PIM.

Prior to his professional career, Glendening played four seasons with the Michigan Wolverines of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.  The Grand Rapids, Mich., native was named the CCHA’s Best Defensive Forward following the 2011-12 season and captained the Wolverines during his junior and senior seasons.

On the other end of the spectrum, Griffins defenseman Chad Billins ran into a roster crunch, and as such, he's signed with the Calgary Flames:

Cool we signed Luke. He seems like a coach’s dream. Billins hopefully will have a better shot to prove himself in Calgary. Wish him well!

Well, if I’m adding right, that just put the Wings at the 50 player limit.

Good luck to Chad Billins.  Sad to see him go, but glad to see him get his shot at the NHL.

Wonderful news about Luke!  I’m really happy for him. He was great at Michigan and with the Griffins last season.
