Red Wings’ school assembly program will continue…minus current players

This isn't necessarily surprising: the Macomb Daily's Diana Dillaber Murray took note that the Red Wings' "School Assembly Program," a charitable initiative, is continuing to roll along despite the looming lockout. The only difference that's involved in conducting the program is that the Wings will be relying upon alumni and front office personnel to get the ambassadorial job done, with Kris Draper subbing for active players earlier this week:

Former Red Wing hockey player Kris Draper jogged with Holy Name Catholic School students in Birmingham this week as part of the kickoff to the Red Wings School Assembly Program.

Children from 115 Detroit Metropolitan Area elementary schools, including almost 30 in Oakland County, can expect players, past and present, from the hockey team to visit this fall thanks to the Detroit Red Wings Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Kroger Company of Michigan.

Current Red Wings players Valtteri Filppula, Niklas Kronwall, Dan Cleary, Tomas Holmstrom and Todd Bertuzzi each attended an assembly last year, as did alumni such as Kirk Maltby and Draper.

Red Wing events are scheduled at the following Oakland County schools: Pattengill Elementary, Berkley, Sept. 19; Helen Keller Elementary, Royal Oak, Sept. 20; Schalm Elementary, Clawson and Upton Elementary, Royal Oak, Sept. 21; Sheiko Elementary, West Bloomfield and Beechview Elementary, Farmington Hills, Sept. 25; West Maple Elementary, Bloomfield Hills, Sept. 27; Costello Elementary, Troy and Bemis Elementary, Troy, Sept. 28; Our Lake of the Lake Elementary Waterford, and Waterford Village, Oct. 4; North Hill Elementary, Rochester Hills and St. John Lutheran School, Rochester, Oct. 12; Brookfield Academy, Rochester Hills, Oct. 16; Orchard Hills Elementary, Novi and Hickory Woods, Novi, Oct. 22; Kent Lake Elementary, South Lyon and Hardy Elementary, South Lyon, Oct. 23; Pine Knob Elementary, Clarkston and Springfield Plains Elementary, Clarkston, Oct. 24; Deerfield Elementary, Novi and Village Oaks Elementary, Novi, Oct. 25; Novi Meadows, Oct. 26; Kurstz Elementary, Milford, Nov. 7; Orion Oaks, Lake Orion, Nov. 8; and St. William Grade School, Walled Lake, Nov. 9.
