Red Wings return Callahan to Grand Rapids

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today assigned right wing Mitch Callahan to the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

Callahan has skated in four games with the Red Wings this season, recording three hits, two blocked shots and two shots on goal in 6:48 average time on ice. The 25-year-old has made 53 appearances for the Griffins this season, picking up 36 points (14-22-36) and 32 penalty minutes. He currently ranks among the team’s leaders in goals (T7th), assists (T9th) and points (7th), as well as shots on goal (120, T5th) and power-play goals (6, 5th). A former sixth-round pick of Detroit in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Callahan skated in one game with the Red Wings before this season, making his NHL debut on March 25, 2014 at Columbus. He has totaled 352 games with the Griffins since 2011-12, registering 179 points (92-87-170), a plus-24 rating and 397 penalty minutes. He also helped the Griffins capture their first-ever AHL Calder Cup championship in 2013 and has accumulated 18 points (7-11-18) in 41 career playoff games.

Prior to his professional career, the native of Whittier, Calif., appeared in 204 games with the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets, notching 128 points (57-71-128) and 440 penalty minutes and helping the Rockets capture the WHL championship in 2009. Callahan also earned a bronze medal with the United States at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y., scoring one goal in six games for his country.
