DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today recalled defenseman Xavier Ouellet from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
Ouellet, 20, logged 17:15 of ice time against the San Jose Sharks during his NHL debut with Detroit on Monday. A native of Bayonne, France, Ouellet has also played in five games with the Griffins this season, showing two assists and a plus-one rating. Prior to turning professional, Ouellet skated in four QMJHL seasons with the Montreal Juniors and Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, registering 160 points (41-119-160) and 177 penalty minutes in 223 games. In 2012-13, he finished ninth on his club with 41 points (10-31-41) in 50 games during the regular season and ranked second among QMJHL defensemen with 16 points (7-9-16) in 15 postseason games. He represented Canada at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia, notching three points (1-2-3) in six games.
