I can only offer a "wow" to this news from MLive's Ansar Khan, via RedWingsFeed:
The Detroit Red Wings have recalled forward Tomas Tatar and goaltender Petr Mrazek from the Grand Rapids Griffins, general manager Ken Holland said.
Mrazek's promotion could enable the Red Wings to give Jimmy Howard a much-needed break. Howard has started all eight games this season. The Red Wings play back-to-back home games Saturday (Edmonton) and Sunday (Los Angeles).
Mrazek is having a strong rookie season with the Griffins. He is 16-7-1, with a 2.26 goals-against average and .916 save percentage. He played in the AHL All-Star game and recorded his first shutout as a pro on Saturday, 1-0 over Abbotsford. Goalie Tom McCollum, who backed up Howard the past six games, was reassigned to the Griffins.
"Ouch" if you're McCollum...
Detroit's regular backup, Jonas Gustavsson, has been idled since Jan. 22 with a groin injury. He hasn't skated since Wednesday and it is uncertain when he will return.
Joey MacDonald hopes to be cleared to play Monday or Tuesday, after being out since March 14 with a bulging disc. MacDonald can be sent to Grand Rapids for a maximum two-week conditioning stint.
Tatar, who notched a hat trick Friday in a 5-1 win at Hamilton, has 19 goals and 20 assists in 44 games with the Griffins. His 39 points rank second on the club to Gustav Nyquist. Tatar played in nine games with the Red Wings in 2010-11, picking up one goal.
According to Khan, Holland offered no new news on any of the Wings' injured players--not Mikael Samuelsson (groin), Darren Helm (back), Ian White (lacerated quadriceps), Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder), MacDonald, Jan Mursak (shoulder) or Brendan Smith (shoulder), who's out for at least two weeks.

Somehow I think cashing that NHL paycheque instead of the AHL one will soften the blow. I think he’s smart enough to know he was never going to see the ice unless Jimmy got shelled. Stats don’t lie. Mrazek is better right now.

I’m also interested in seeing how Mrazek’s makes out playing against the big boys. I think (hope) he has a great future ahead of him.
I really miss watching Helm.

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
wow, bet that sucked the life right out of McCollum no doubt. Mrazek is having a fine season, he really has come along way in a short time. A hot goaltender(even if he is a AHL goalie) is a way better choice than a questionable shaky guy that hasnt played in a while. Not to mention, being Jimmy T’s last year, if the kid plays hot it might push Jimmy T a bit.
