Red Wings recall Joe Hicketts

As insurance...

Here's the Wings' press release:

JOE HICKETTS RECALLED FROM GRAND RAPIDS
… 2017 Calder Cup Champion Has 42 Points in 116 Career AHL Games …

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today recalled defenseman Joe Hicketts from the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

Hicketts, 21, is in his second professional season, appearing in 43 games with the Griffins and registering eight points (2-6-8) and 26 penalty minutes. In his rookie season with Grand Rapids, the Kamloops, British Columbia, native led the team’s defensemen with 34 points (7-27-34) in 73 games, which ranked seventh among first-year AHL defensemen. Hicketts also led the Griffins in postseason scoring after registering eight points (1-7-8) in 19 games en route to helping the team capture its second AHL championship in five seasons. In 116 career AHL games, he has produced 42 points (9-33-42), 66 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating.

Originally signed by the Red Wings as an undrafted free agent in September 2014, the 5-foot-8, 180-pound defenseman spent four seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Victoria Royals from 2012-16, serving the last two years as the team’s captain and posting back-to-back 60-point seasons. Hicketts totaled 173 points (32-141-173), 149 penalty minutes and a plus-69 rating in 224 games with the Royals and was a WHL West Second-Team All-Star in 2015 and First-Team All-Star in 2016. Internationally, Hicketts represented Canada twice at the IIHF World Junior Championship, winning gold in 2015 and serving as an alternate captain for the team in 2016 while totaling six points (1-5-6) in 12 games over the two tournaments. He also earned medals at three other tournaments for his country, winning gold at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, picking up a silver at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and earning bronze at the 2014 World Under-18 Championship.

Must mean that Daley will be out at least a couple of games. It’s the right time to get Hicketts up here - he will (or should) play instead of being an 8th or 9th wheel like the 18 hours Lashoff had here earlier this year.

If Kenny and Blash will play Hicketts and sit XO/Jensen/Vet (hahahah) it will signal that the season is lost to them.

hicketts won’t play.

I haven’t seen a single Griffins game this season but those stats 2-6=8 for Hicketts are not very impressive.

Lol so because it’s been a GINORMOUS down year for the Griffins in general, you think hicketts number aren’t impressive. While yes he has 8 points as a Dman. Keep in mind he lead the team in points as a dman(20/21 yo) last year. He was a Ppg his last two full WHL season. Played on team Cabinda and while small, pummels bigger guys with huge hits. He’s a totally different player than, let’s say, rafalski.

I hesitate to call these DET games “NHL games that count” at this point.

and i also said i didnt see a single Griffins game this season… Those numbers are not impressive THIS SEASON. If you want to bring his stats from other seasons then its another topic.

What the Wings need is puck carrier D that can lead the way, obviously with those stats Hicketts is not one of those.

But don’t get me wrong, i want Hicketts to be with the Wings, i’m just a little disappointed that he hasn’t burned the AHL this season, like any valuable prospect should before getting recalled.

#RedWings Blashill said Hicketts will make NHL debut tomorrow at @NJDevils Wouldn’t reveal who he’ll be paired with. Said doesn’t know how long he’ll be with team. Daley (lower body injury) out next 2 days. Possible Thursday, more likely after the All-Star break
